GREAT news:

Speaking of the defensive line, you can probably “pencil-in” rookie Sione Fua and feel-good story Corvey Irvin as the starters inside. Fua, who stepped in for injured NT Ron Edwards two weeks ago, has done a nice job of eating up space. Rivera told us last week that he wants to see his linebackers “flying downhill”, and a strong presence at NT is critical to this.

Irvin, a 3rd round pick by Carolina in 2009, was cut by the Panthers last year, then re-signed. Irvin, with the guidance of new defensive line coach Eric Washington, appears destined for a productive year in defensive coordinator Sean McDermott’s scheme.

WLB Thomas Davis did not suffer any new setbacks after returning to practice on Tuesday. He is also expected to see action on Friday. Davis has added some muscle in the offseason during his rehab, and looks like a carbon-copy of former Tampa Bay WLB Derrick Brooks.

Overall, the Carolina secondary did not allow a single passing touchdown, and only 2 passing plays of 20+ yards.

CB Captain Munnerlyn appears to have his legs back, plucking an athletic interception from Clausen on Tuesday. Munnerlyn projects to be the #2 corner opposite veteran Chris Gamble, who is expected to “shadow” the #1 WR from each opponent in 2011.

Speaking of athletic, WR Steve Smith is running with as much force and agility as he has in his 10-year NFL career. Smith is tentatively scheduled to be in the starting lineup for Carolina on Friday.

Let's see, adding Smith to the offense with a QB battle brewing and adding Johnson, Davis, Gamble and Munnerlyn on D for game two....Nothing like the excitement leading up to this game. Looks like we will get a good look at the 3rd DE competition with Johnson back and Hardy still out. Even if it's not Friday it's gonna be interesting when we see the fully installed O with game one starters on the field. Closing in on that for sure.

You guys are great for the support. Had 1020+ unique visitors yesterday. Already 300+ this early AM. Approaching 10K in just 15 days. Just added:

-RSS feed for NFL headlines, per NBC Sports (not just Panthers news)

-Video Link to prior game highlights, per NFL.com

Tomorrow, rolling out the podcast, which will be available streaming on the site, and for download.

Damn, it's football season....

Thx!

Really good read, plus a cool looking site. Are you a reporter? Is that how you get your info??

Here are my qualifications:

1. Radio dude

2. Reporter since 2003

3. Know more about the nuance/schematics of the pro game than any writer/talking head in this region.

Not being cocky. Just honest.

Thanks for the continued support.

That makes you overqualified for the Huddle I'm afraid - but I appreciate the insight and journalism. Thanks.

mentioning Jimmy and Kurt Warner in the same sentence is an insult to Kurt Warner.

Other than that, I have enjoyed your camp updates and look forward to you continuing your Panther coverage. Good job. With Gannt out of the picture we need someone to step up out there (not a dig at Reed as I think he is very good).

Well, Darin did a helluva job with updates, and Reed/Person are both very solid. Thank you for even including me with those guys.

Yea...the Warner bit...again....dryness of humor

Looking very good, though. In practice. That, is. We'll see.

    • Malcom Spence is the best player remaining, hope he’s there.
    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
