Legedu taking number 17

Don't have any issue with them giving out #90 especially given the circumstances of Peppers leaving, but I do agree with everyone they should have held out on #17.

I think Delhomme may sign a one-day contract and retire here after the season. I think he wants to see if he gets a shot somewhere this season once the season starts, but if not, I can see him officially retiring after the season. And it should be here.

Delhomme meant a lot and was the face of this franchise for 7 years. They should definitely retire his number. He put the Panthers on the map from '03- '05. Even though it ended badly, I will always remember the fire and passion he brought. And he did turn in a MVP performance in the SB.

I hated they gave out #87 as fast as they did too, but as much as I love MM, he was not the face of the franchise and leader the way Delhomme was. Delhomme in my opinion is the only player besides Mills that deserves to have his jersey retired.

#89 will too when his career is over.

Outside of Smitty, Peppers is easily the best player in the history of our franchise. Actually, if you just evaluate talent + production....Peppers probably edges Smitty as he hasn't been handicapped by QB play.

Peppers didn't demand a trade....which is common in today's NFL. Kept his mouth shut and played out his contract. People need to get over that Pep was ready to move on......and if you look at how things played out here (he probably made a wise move for himself if you look at age and what Carolina was about to go through)

Peppers leaving was a business decision which I respect but I wouldn't want them retiring the number of a guy who didn't want to be here, especially the last couple of years. He produced while he was here (and was very well compensated) and then moved on.

He never treated the Panthers organization, team, city, or fans like he wanted to be a leader or really the face of the team. That's fine, his production speaks for itself, but that is precisely why a guy like him should not have his jersey retired and a guy like a Sam Mills, Jake Delhomme, or Steve Smith should.

Production is important (and it is definitely defensible to say no one should have their number retired as of yet), but I don't think it should be the total picture.

Delhomme shouldn't get his jersey retired strictly on his production, but when you factor everything he brought to the team, no one else has meant more to the franchise, not even Sam Mills, so far.

I am totally cool with them not retiring his number (wish they hadn't given it out again so fast), but I for one am in favor of retiring his number.

...and personally I don't like this, when Jake retires we should sign him to a 1 day contract and the # 17 should be retired with him.

Not even close. You don't retire numbers for a player likr Jake Delhomme. You do it for Brady, Manning, and Favre

Should Seattle retire Matt Hasselbacks number? lol

Jake posted an MVP-worthy performance in SB 38, the only SB for our young franchise... I think that makes him worthy of having his jersey retired.

You don't retire a jersey for losing a superbowl.

That would make all of us losers.

We should have a Hall of Pants.

Delhomme and King.

Haha, throw Hurney's unironed pants in there too to complete the trifecta. Have you ever seen another executive professional who was so unkempt? I mean seriously, could he not just pay somebody to make sure his clothes look good. I'm surprised as concerned as Richardson is about appearance he allows Hurney to look so sloppy.

Going back to the Delhomme thing though, just playing Devil's Advocate, but what is the rationale behind retiring Mills and not Delhomme, based on production and what he meant strictly to the Panthers?

Yeah....that aint right. Take a wr number. Love him or hate him, jake meant a lot to this team. Let it sit a few more years.

Definitely hate him. Mediocre QB. Definitely not worth having his # retired.

I still dislike the fact that basically all of our WRs have numbers in the teens.

    • Ummm not sure adding anther 5'9 180 pound soaking wet forward is the way to go here.....
    • What has happened in HS athletics busted full force into the college world with this NIL/transfer portal stuff. HS sports has been jacked up for a long time now. You have all these "prep schools" that are basically just diploma mills for athletes who hoover up all the good athletes they can get and they're all on scholarship. Then they go out and recruit decent athletes with rich parents to come onboard and pay outrageous tuition while they tout their success at getting their athletes college scholarships. Yeah, those athletes getting college scholarships are the same ones you're giving scholarships to so that you can use them to recruit the rich kids whose parents can pay for it all. You see the same thing in youth travel ball leagues. The whole thing is just getting crazy.
    • It's your right to refer to it as vague, but it still flouts the theory of "zero evidence" that Tepper is changing. Here's another: "Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales and general manager Dan Morgan are reportedly being given a larger leadership role within the organization. Panthers owner David Tepper 'has taken a more hands-off approach of late,' according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. 'He's trying to trust Canales and GM Dan Morgan to get it right, knowing that the roster requires patience in its current state,' Fowler wrote. 'We shall see if he holds to that.'" https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10146782-report-panthers-david-tepper-has-taken-a-more-hands-off-approach-to-team   ""David Tepper just wants to win and he's gonna supply everything that we need to win.. Things are changing around here and things are looking really positive" ~ Dan Morgan  https://x.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1917639137550627107?t=6vgo8yXTO6eD0Gb55hyzNg&s=19   From about 2:15-6:35, Julian Council, Locked on Panthers, gives his take on whether Tepper seems to be changing (and specifically referenced the war room in his analysis):    Dean Jones of Cat Crave on David Tepper in the war room. "He was an innocent bystander throughout a hugely important decision, placing full trust in Morgan and Tilis to make the right call." Jones also quoted Pat McAfee: "What I noticed though, at one point, they looked at (David) Tepper to get an answer, Tepper didn’t say sh*t. All anybody has said about Tepper is that he’s hands-on, hands-on, hands-on. Too handsy, too involved. He’s not letting the football people do their thing. We just watched in the biggest moment for their franchise, a top ten pick, he just sat there and let everybody do their jobs. I think if you’re a Panthers fan, you love everything you saw there." https://catcrave.com/silence-from-david-tepper-becomes-panthers-loudest-victory Granted, you're not getting a major headline here, but that's not going to happen anyway. Fowler isn't exactly a nobody, everybody knows McAfee, and you also have some locals that follow the team (including Dean Jones). Of course you have a right to believe that Tepper hasn't really changed, but to say there is no evidence that he just may be changing is not really true. It's just not. Hate the guy, but the way that he has handled this current regime is different than he handled previous teams, and his silence in the war room and publicly in general is different than years back.
