We really have a shot at this...

lightsout

Honestly, the more I look into this Sunday, the more I believe. Just seems too strange. New staff, rookie QB, good targets to get the ball to, etc. This isn't the 1-dimensional offense of old (with the occasional shot to Smitty down the field). This is a match-up offense and an athletic offense now with the addition of Cam.

GB has a good defense. They have one of the best (if not the best) QBs in the league. They have big-play capability with their skill guys. They play all 3 facets of the game well. But here is the thing, we match up with them.

Gamble did a good job against Fitz last week. We played the run well at times, and we did OK overall (forget the stats, people. Missed tackles...). Coverage is still iffy, but all we have to do is weather the storms as they come.

This is going to be the game-changer. What will GB's defense do? Will they take the Arizona route and blitz all-living-hell at Newton? Will they show a lot of zone-blitz schemes? Will they sit back and wait for Newton to make a mistake? This is the important factor. And the beautiful thing is, with Cam's skill-set, we can capitalize on all of it. The run game could be there this week, assuming the OL has their collective head out of it's ass. This is what we need.

Just no stupid mistakes on ST and we'll be fine.

Sunday, get here baby!

Let me start of by saying that your sig is freaking amazing...I have no clue what you just said.

Honestly though, come on man...Cam Newton might be what we all want him to be but this team is NOT ready to compete against teams like green bay. Do we have a chance? Absolutely. Could Cam come out and have another lights out performance? Sure. Will either of those things realistically happen? My sources say no. I'm excited about the panthers...very excited...but I'm not delusional. And I don't think being that way makes me any less of a fan as others seem to think. We are starting a rookie QB who is being protected by a undrafted rookie right tackle. We have two rookie defensive tackles and we have to play a safety with average coverage skills at nickel bc we have no corners on our roster that are worth a damn. To think we have any kind of chance to win this game is down right crazy. I'll be estatic if we can stay within one score throughout the game but that will require Cam to limit mistakes, the team to limit penalties, and the defense to find away to slow down Rodgers.

By no means am I saying that Cam will have a repeat of last Sunday. I am saying, however, that he can and probably will be efficient. Remember, all the things you just said about Cam are the same things some were saying all of last week leading up to the Arizona game. Sure, it is GB, and they have a better, more complex defense, but c'mon man.

There are issues, like those you mentioned. But I think we will be OK. I am NOT saying we WILL win. I am simply stating that if you think this is a guaranteed loss, you're delusional. We have a shot. Hence, the thread title.

I'm not big on moral victories, but I think if we can really stay in this game until late, I'll accept a moral victory against GB. They are probably the best team in the NFC, and we were one of the worst a year ago. If we can make this a one score game, I'd really feel good about where our team is headed.

    • I don't think it was fear of the unknown because he tried to hide the extent of the injuries that made him drop. After the drop, the reports I heard were that teams knew what was wrong with his knee and it was something similar to another athlete from a few years ago (honestly don't remember if it was even a football player).  That it was basically one of those things where he should be fine for a while, there isn't a huge concern of immediate injury risk.   But what he has going on with his knee is something that is degenerative and there's little chance he'll be able to play more than 5 or so years on it before he won't be able to play anymore. So basically it was teams knowing if they draft him, he's probably going to be only a rookie contract player and even if he's great, you might not be able to get use out of him on a second contract.  Which in turn makes the drop make sense, but I'm kinda surprised some contending team didn't take him late in the 1st, hoping he'd put them over the top on a SB run but then not even have to worry about giving him a big contract in 4 years too.
    • Depends if they see the writing on the wall with their roster and contracts and decide to bite the bullet and begin a complete rebuild and roster overhaul.  I have no clue why some franchises (IE us) refuse to do this and keep half assing trying to win 8 games or so.  Do it correctly, take your lumps and build a contender.  We shall see what loomis decides.
    • Each team plays 17 games.  I do not see why they don't just have each team play one international game per year.  Neutral site game, 8 home, 8 away.
