I did my happy dance the day it was announced that Andrew Luck was staying in school, I came on the board only to read all the whiners talk about how hurt they were with Luck's decision; and I'm thinking to myself these guys have no idea what has just fell into our laps lol, I knew it was no way now that the Panthers front office if they were worth their salt could possibly pass over a talent like Newton at quarterback.

The funny part in all of this was after the Luck decision is how these analyst started "scrambling" no pun intended; to try to find a golden boy replacement to pump up over Newton and they came up with Blain Gabbert lololol!!! Kudos to all the Panther fans who weren't buying it, but especially kudos to the Panthers organization for getting it right as well along with us!!!

Pretty much everything about Cam coming out said he would struggle A LOT coming into the league.

Mechanics, more athlete than QB, etc.

Pretty much everything about Luck says he is next great QB phenom.

Big Arm, Pro-style offense, etc.

What has changed, in my eyes thus far, is the assumption Cam was more athlete than QB.

I don't think anyone could have realized how much work he has put into mechanics and reads.

Compare the NattyTitle game to just the Arizona game.

It's like watching two different players.

The one thing I will say, I wonder if all the time they spent going over Cam caused them to not scout the rest of the draft as well. Because you look at everyone we drafted after Cam, and they really arent successful or breaking out now.

I think the both of our DT are good players, but most likely role players,

our 4th round CB who said his knee would be fine by training camp has yet to practice,

our 5th round WR although he has not been bad, you would have expected if he really was a diamond in the rough, that he would have already been climbing the depth chart a-la Denarious Moore of the Oakland Raiders.

Our 6th round LB couldnt make the team and is only on the practice squad because we used a draft pick on him.

Then our 2 OL in the 6th and 7th round havent seen the field at all, although Williams is due to injury. But neither have really impressed. Ziemba had the perfect storm to make his first start last week but obviously he didnt capitalize.

However, if Cam succeeds then this draft will become one of the best all time automatically because thats how a GM makes his name. Look at Polian, I dont think he is anything special and you can see how his team is falling apart without Manning, but he drafted Manning so he is automatically a great GM.

Pilares has/had a high ankle sprain.

Both DT's are doing rather well to be rookies DT's which usually struggle.

Hogan's knee was know of and they were not surprised, I think it was a project pick.

I point more to Bell being a diamond in a rough and Ziemba being a project.

Dont get me wrong, I love our DT's, But do I ever think they will get past a Buckner type role? probably not. Loved Buckner, but he was no Jenkins (Jenkins in his prime) by that I mean a second fiddle role at DT

Pilares was available for the last game, ankle was fine, but they chose not to activate him. I just feel like with him and AE we are trying to find a new SS instead of just drafting the best player available and letting that player become the first him instead of the next Smitty.

that's something 32 other NFL teams are trying to do.. some find a Kris Jenkins, most find the Buckner types.. DTs don't grow on trees..

Pilares prob won't find the field.. that isn't unnatural for a 5th round WR.. they may be looking for a SS role, but chances are they are just trying to find an average WR.. neither can be graded for another 2-3 years, so asking these questions are rhetorical at best..

You don't have to go back that far.

Compare week one with preseason three and it's like watching two different players.

The job they did prepping him and the job he did getting ready, borderline miraculous.

Still just two weeks in, but it's a great start so far.

Yeah, I'll admit, I did not think Newton was even near to Luck's ability. I was flat out 100% wrong.

I was never on the anybody but Cam train. But I was on the Luck train, and I am honestly happy Luck didn't come out. Luck didn't want to be a Panther, and Cam did.

Nobody can say, "well no one knew Cam was gonna be this good".

Bullpoo, JR, Hurney, and Rivera did

I'm glad Luck stayed too. After seeing Cam throw deep a few times I am SOOO glad. I thought that was Luck's biggest weakness.

    • Me and you clearly have different definitions of production. If you remove the 2023 season where Thielen had just over 1k yards he is 43rd on our all time receivers list just ahead of Jonathan Mingo. And before you ask why would we remove that season? Well a couple reasons. For one thing we won a whopping 2 games. And for the biggest. Thielen was 14th in targets in 2023. We absolutely force fed him the ball all season and finished with the 32nd passing offense. For comparison sake 33 year old Jerricho Cotchery eclipsed over 1k total yards in just 2 more games and with 67 less targets than Thielen did in that 2023 season. He has above average hands. That's it. We overpaid him because we were desperate and overvalued him. That's the reality no matter how many times you or anyone else wants to quote me and get defensive about it.
    • He's played great and it was a win-win (rare free agent) for both parties.  One of the points is he hasn't made enough difference to "waste" 35 million on. Another point is by the time Panthers are hitting their prime, he would have taken snaps away from young WRs/TEs/RBs. "Thus" in the long term, hurting the teams new future "window."  But I dare think of the monkey poo of a offense the Panthers had without him the past 2 years. Lack of talent leads to many problems, including paying a 35 year old to be somewhat respectable. Hes one of few that cared enough and made a effort. Plus you know he's done great stuff in many other ways for the team, community juggernaut, leadership, etc.  Judgement is for AT and his 3 year panther career!!
    • But it has gotten a little wacky. RBs-https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/contracts/_/position/rb     A couple months ago iggles made Bark the highest guaranteed RB, jeanty was until then. That's what matters the guarantee. A rookie never played a down was the leader, until iggles howie made things right.  If a safety gets drafted in the top 8 or so, he would have the highest money too or very close to it.    Add in TEs and C too.    Even with the fixed %, the numbers are getting too much for a player that's not proven themselves.     Plus anytime a QB is drafted it screws up the contracts for players around and if next year a punter gets drafted at the same 90th spot, they want the same contract with the 5.7% increase. Teams would be laughing.    Its just reached this point. Another 10 years and I bet the vets will be crying.
