1 hand off in the red zone and other observations.

One.

It seems the deep ball is no prob for Cam. 30 yards and in the Panthers really struggle. Without digging into the last few games red zone stats, I'm willing the bet there was no more than 5 hand offs in the red zone.

Other Def cord's see that and know that. Until some changes happen in the red zone packages and schemes, expect more of the same.

I will also go back and look how often Smitty is targeted within the red zone. If you look at the drive charts, first down the Panthers go deep almost every time to SS.

But in the red zone, they are proly left with other options instead of SS but I haven't looked at film to see all of that.

Bottom line, they have to give some dif looks in the RZ.

Newton running is very effective it spreads them out I think the threat of newton running is great fro everything

no it's not, it's predictable and it's going to get him injured, the qb scrambles are one thing, but every designed run down along the goaline has been completely predictable....

The numbers are going to appear skewed.....Cam is essentially a redzone RB. Which is why he has converted 4 times now in 4 games as a runner in the redzone.

He converted on 2 TDs today. Those are runs. And Cam likely is a better redzone runner than a traditional handoff.

do you know how many times he ran in college out of the SEC. Cam is built to run. That makes him different than other QBs who are called on to run.

Running is predictable in the redzone. Doesn't matter who does the running.

 I know people like to think the SEC is comparable to the NFL but it's not. I have no problem with him scrambling, actually I love it, but the goaline runs are just setting the kid up to get crushed and rolled up on. I would much rather see Stewart or DeAngelo take those goaline carries then have the one guy we can't lose get hurt on a predictable read option play inside the five....just my .02 of course....

its predictable because it doesn't happen often. the title says hand offs. yes, at the end of the day we want a td. but I'm looking at this from the opposing D's perspecitve.

I let Cam have his thows and yards from the 30 and beyond. But from the 20 in, my gameplan IMPROVES, based on the current play selections of the Panthers.

They aren't even doing running plays to keep the D honest. So they go Cover 2 and shrink the field and just wait for throw, throw, throw, fg.

The critique here is not Cam related but play calling related.

Predictable loses meaning in the red zone. The threat of newton running is a good thing and I like that they aren't afraid to use him. I fail to see how it is not effective. Further back near the 20 I could see your point but closer to the goalie cam needs to be utilized. He's the catalyst that is keeping this team from being the worst team in the league.

    • Okay then. To me that means Russell Wilson was Coryell. Because I see the proposition completely in the Russell Wilson punt/pass put it up for grabs mold. Count on the receiver to catch it or knock it down.    And the reason I thought that was the intent with Legette is the abysmal downfield game from 2023. As in, there was barely any.   I look at it as if… the result of a deep attempt isn’t as important as the opponent understanding they have to defend it. So I was all for some 50/50s. Coryell, Walsh whoever.  I do favor the Coryell approach personally but also very much value versatility, it doesn’t have to be strict. Just make the defense defend the whole field, however you do it. It has to include downfield throws.
    • Sold, or in the process of being sold. Could be either way. Consider this for a second... Last season, our defensive coordinator steered what many have called the worst defense in NFL history.  Canales would absolutely have been justified in firing him, and no one would have blamed him if he had.  But what did he do? He gave Evero another chance to come back and prove he could be better. Does that tell us something about Canales? I think it does. Now apply that to Bryce 😕
    • Canales has never been part of big YAC offenses in the NFL.  That’s not his tree.  Not in Seattle, Tampa or here.  Every O he has been associated with basically has been bottom half of the league in YAC.  That’s what Bryce needs to happen though  2 very different things….and very much gets into why the middle school QB doesn’t fit
