If you buy into passer rating...

Some folks do, others don't. But for whatever you think of passer rating, here's where Newton stands four games in.

Among qualifying QBs, Newton is ranked 16th overall.

Quarterbacks he's ranked above include Donovan McNabb, Kyle Orton, Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, Rex Grossman, Jay Cutler, Andy Dalton, Josh Freeman, Mark Sanchez, Sam Bradford, Kerry Collins and Blaine Gabbert.

Among the higher rated are Matt Stafford, Alex Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tony Romo, Michael Vick, Jason Campbell, Philip Rivers and Kevin Kolb. Matt Ryan is edging him too, but only by a whisker (0.3).

There are definitely still things to work on (worried primarily about some bad habits and improving accuracy) but for a rookie with a huge transition in offensive style to overcome, that's not at all bad :D

Newton admitted in an interview with Brian Billick that he's still a little overwhelmed by what's coming at him on the field. To be doing this well while still feeling "overwhelmed" is a pretty good sign. When the proverbial "game slowing down" happens, this could get really fun to watch.

Yeah, if he's doing this well while it seems to him that there are 12 guys on defense every week, just wait til he gets these NFL defenses figured out.

Frankly though, I'm just happy to have a QB who doesn't curl up into a ball when there is pressure in the pocket. There were a couple of plays yesterday where I was thinking to myself that every other QB we have ever had would have been dead meat, but Cam just calmly escapes the pressure and gets positive yardage. That ability alone, is one of the main reasons why I lobbied so hard for Cam to be our pick.

im surprised there is 16 other qbs playing better than cam newton. cam is playing pretty darn good so far.

Only fifteen actually.

And some of those are names I chose not to even bother to mention. Names like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, etc. Not exactly a shock to see them at the top of the ratings.

I doubt there's 15 QB's playing better than Cam. Especially for the amount of times he's throwing the ball. I watched Jason Campbell yesterday against the Patriots, and this guy plays scared the whole game. Scared to throw the ball down field, scared to make a mistake, scared to take off running, just scared.

Cam is definitely a top ten QB already!

Considering he has had a couple picks that weren't entirely his fault, the reams we've played, the team around him, and the game he had to play in a monsoon, I'd say Cam is already better than around 13 of those ahead of him...

At this point in the season, I don't see how one can make a valid argument that the top 3 QBs in the league aren't Brady, Brees, and Newton...

Already a top 10 QB with one of the biggest arms in the league as the YPG and total passing yards attest. One thing people also need to throw in there is Cam is #2 behind Vick for total rushing yards (133) for QBs and leads all QBs in rushing TDs. In fact his 4 rushing TDs is tied for 2nd overall in the entire league right now.

Aaron Rodgers?!?!?!

?!?!?!?!

Meh... He has a great supporting cast and hasn't had that much opposition... Plus, they've played us...

Don't get me wrong, he's up there too, but Cam is playing better than almost anyone except maybe Brady...

Rodgers is a very good and efficient QB, but its true, people do underrate his supporting cast, specifically his receiving core. Even though he's one of the best, I dont look at Rodgers as CARRYING the Packers the way Brees does the Saints or Brady does the Pats. Pack can still win when he doesnt put up huge #'s.

    • https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47371200/sources-rams-fire-special-teams-coordinator-chase-blackburn LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Rams have fired special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The move marks the first in-season coaching change that Rams head coach Sean McVay has made in his nine seasons in Los Angeles. Rams assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica will take over and become the lead special teams coach, a source told Schefter. The Rams, 11-4 and second place in the NFC West, lost to the Seahawks on Thursday night in a game that included a Seattle punt return for a touchdown and a missed 48-yard field goal by Los Angeles kicker Harrison Mevis. The Seahawks (12-3) overtook the Rams for first place in the division and the top overall record in the NFC thanks to the 38-37 overtime victory. Though the Rams have lost only four games this season, three have involved special teams miscues. In the Rams' first loss of the season, 33-26 to the Eagles, Los Angeles had its final two offensive possessions end with blocked kicks. In the Rams' Week 10 victory over the Saints, kicker Joshua Karty missed an extra point and a 39-yard field goal attempt. After the game, McVay said the Rams' special teams issues "can't continue like this." Los Angeles replaced long-snapper Alex Ward with Jake McQuaide and Karty with Mevis, who had not missed a kick until Thursday night in Seattle. Blackburn, 42, was in his third season as the Rams' special teams coordinator. A former linebacker for the Giants and Panthers, he also has worked as an assistant with Carolina and Tennessee.
    • It was a bad play from Icky but the OL didn't give up a sack until late in the 4th quarter and Bryce just stood there like he was canatonic. If our 3rd year number one overall pick can't overcome one single sack against a rebuilding Saints team that should only have 2 wins this season then it isn't ever going to happen   This is your quote. I mean I’ve quoted it twice. It was followed by calling people that defended him fugers and several other meltdowns I can also quote.    Shame you for working for a living??? Wow this is a whole new level to your victim mentality thing you like to do. You don’t have to watch games live. Or don’t spend an entire thread arguing about something you didn’t get the full picture of. I miss parts of games all the time. That’s just life. Not even going into the whole losing all respect thing.
    • Rams ended up firing ST coach and former Panthers coach Chase Blackburn after the loss. Sounds all too familiar.
