Why Stewart is getting the passing reps

Didn't pay attention to this until I was watching some highlights....but did everyone see the Stewart block on the Smith TD?

Stewart literally lifts the guy rushing off the ground and drops him on his head...allowing Cam to step up.

Stewart's blitz pick up has been great this year. Not something sexy to talk about but VERY important given the direction of the offense in the future and Stewart's age. Cam needs that type RB when we get pass happy.

also gives you a good idea of why goodson is not used much , he's terrible at picking up the blitz. wouldn't mind seeing stew line up at fullback some, he probably would open some holes i could run through

Don't know the answer there...I remember Stew picking up someone inside, but another blitzer on the outside, maybe he was out of position.

yeah, Stewart definately had 2 blitzers....and opted for the inside guy. I think that was the right move on his part. Cam was in the shotgun so the guy blitzing from the edge has the longest distance to travel......and that also doesn't make it a true "blindside" blitz since Cam wasn't under center dropping back w/ his back to that side.

With them sending that many blitzers to that side Cam still has some repsonsiblities picking/locating that blitzer. I think the guys in the both had it right .....but who knows.

It wasn't the correct move on his part, even he realized it. He went to the inside but realized that he didn't need to be blocked and you could see him try to make his way outside. By then it was too late. It's a tough split second decision but if he would have waited half a second Cam would have been protected better.

That being sad, Stewart is a beast when it comes to blocking and picking up blitzes. And like you said it certainly makes a difference when he is in there during passing plays.

general rule of thumb in the NFL is that it's the pass blockers' responsibility for anyone trying to come from the inside. if the defense is rushing one more guy than there are blockers, for example rushing 6 against 5 OL, 7 against 6 OL + TE/RB, then the outside guy is the QB's responsibility, I.E. he is expected to know where he is and where he's coming from, and react accordingly. that's what John Lynch was talking about during the broadcast.

The job of the HB on any pass blocking assignment is the most immediate threat to the pocket regardless of where it comes from. Even if it was a corner blitz, he would be responsible for him. Stewart was expecting a linebacker to shoot the gap but in reality the LB went around the line, Stewart lost him behind the mass of humanity that is two lines meeting, and the linebacker slipped around for an open shot on Newton. Stewart never even put a hat on anybody on that play because the offensive line totally ate up the front four.

It was a failed pickup, but overall he has been pretty good this season.
