Mike Mayock Talks Cam Newton

Relevant details:

"I had Cam Newton as my second quarterback last year, after Blaine Gabbert," Mayock said. "I didn’t have any problem with Cam Newton as a passer or an athlete. I was at his pro day. I watched every tape he had. He is a natural thrower of the football. Did he have some accuracy glitches that showed up from time to time? Yes. But every young quarterback does. My issue with him was a broader issue, which has to play out over the next two or three years. Is he a mature enough kid that he is going to embrace this thing on a day to day basis and grind it out and want to be the best quarterback in the league? If that’s the case, then he will be the best quarterback in the league when it is all said and done because he is that gifted. But this I want to be an entertainer and an icon and all that kind of stuff – we all blew that out of proportion a little bit. That was kind of the tip of the iceberg to me. What was below that? Do I get a kid with the intangibles of a Peyton Manning or do I get a kid who is more interested in staying out and being an entertainer? That’s going to have to play out over two or three years. I’m so impressed with him right now, I can’t even begin to tell you."

Mayock said he has a role as an instructor at a passing academy run by Peyton Manning , so he has seen Luck in that setting as well as games.

"This kid has a passion for the game, great work ethic and he is gifted," Mayock said. "He has all three of the things you are looking for. Now I think Cam Newton throws the ball a little bit more naturally. But I think Luck is more accurate right now. It all has to play out. We are all getting carried away with Andrew Luck right now. But because he checks off all the boxes, everybody is excited."

Still comparing Newton to an unproven college quarterback?

Andrew Luck is probably the most over-talked and over-hyped player that will ever come out of college football.

I would love for nothing more than he came out and pulled a Jamarcus Russel or even better, a Ryan Leaf. I hate Cowards. Argue with me if u want about him "doing the right and commendable" thing by staying in school. If you're a fan if this team and organization... Then there's no possible way you could ever pull for him IMO

Unless of course, you thank him for having Cam... Which if that's the case I'm FIRST in line!

Some other quotes from Mayock:

It’s just this gut feeling I have: I don’t know how great he wants to be. He’s got all the tools. Something tells me that he’ll be content to be a multimillionaire who’s pretty good. And he doesn’t get it done for me. I think the kid is smart enough. I just don’t know if he cares enough.

I really didn’t need to see the workout, nor do I need to hear about the workout. … I’ve watched five of his game tapes. …I would also (offer) one cautionary note, and that is the best Pro Day for a quarterback I ever attended was JaMarcus Russell. That same day, even though I admitted it was the best Pro Day I ever saw, I also said I wouldn’t take him in the first round.

he's a developmental prospect. As a general manager, I would be comfortable taking him somewhere in the 20s.

he did NOT lie. Mayock moved him up to 2nd before the draft. It may not be in text but it was in his NFL network stuff

It was clear as Mayock saw him working out more etc he moved him up.

edit: http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/09000d5d81f19e10/article/defense-still-rules-top-32-but-with-a-few-fresh-faces-included

think that has Cam as #2

I know he said he was his #2 QB near the draft and said he expected us to take him #1 overall because he thought we liked him more than Gabbert

Just found that and came back here to change it, thanks.

Having seen the pregame video from last Sunday and the conversation between Leslie Frazier/officials and Ron Rivera where Rivera says: (paraphrasing) "Cam is a great kid, early in and late out, his parents raised him right."

I wish nothing but the best for Luck and much of the hype is genuine and deserved. He's that good, right now. I don't think for a minute that he shunned us or any other of these other pety, pity me theories.

I was driving the Luck bandwagon and he has everything you look for, but Cam is my man now and he has the things that you can't account for, for the things you can't teach. Cam doesn't have the X factor, he is the X factor.

Mayock, for my money, is the best in the business. His questions about Cam gave always been character related and he still hasn't answered those questions yet but I believe he will.

I don't get the obsession with wanting Luck to fail, but it's pretty stupid. We should be wishing him well because if he did declare for the draft we wouldn't have the phenom we have under center now.

    • What it feels like is a horrible source reality. What a person sees is a horrible source for reality. Stats can be easily misunderstood because because they are interpretive and contextual. Very large data sets with dozens more more connected variables are difficult to deal with and understand correctly. Throw in confirmation bias, abstraction, emotions and the way human brains are wired make it really easy to roll with eye tests and intuition. The negativity for Bryce was really high and most were ready to trade that asset for peanuts until the second half of last year when he began to play much, much better.  Hope sprang eternal.  The Saints game last year.  Going toe to toe and almost beating the two teams who went to the Superbowl last year.  Beating the Falcons when the Falcons had everything to play for.  Haters started adjusting their tune. Fan and media starting saying it looks like Carolina has found their franchise QB.   The real answer was and is, maybe. If he plays great on Sunday the anti-Bryce crowd will find other excuses or say it's only one game. If he plays horrible, it'll be more of the "I told you so. I knew it before he was drafted." (which is beyond stupid since there there is not an actual way to know if a player will be successful in the NFL or not.) I'll leave with a simple example.  Of the initial list of incompletions due to WR error, Jarod Goff has 0.  He was 31 for 39 at an almost 80% completion percentage.  His WR's much has balled out. Except when you add the facts that only 11 of those passes were to WRs.  14 were to RB's and 6 to the TE.  Gibbs has 10 of those receptions and he's elite so that explains why we shouldn't put much stock into this stat.  But then we see that Gibbs also set an NFL record with the least number of yards (31) for any player with at least 10 receptions in a game. Fun stuff! Oh yeah.  From week 1 how many people had Justin Fields and Daniel Jones playing at elite levels?
    • How do you reconcile with the fact that the most competent and productive the Panthers passing offense has looked at any point between 2023 and 2025 were both games where Andy Dalton (who is completely washed and terrible) started? 680 passing yards and 5 touchdowns in two games. And one of those games was with Frank Reich as the head coach. This team needs competent QB play.
    • If we're in position and he is there, he will absolutely be the pick. He goes to South Carolina after all
