I have to hear about the Texans from one of my friends who's a Houston nut...so from my perspective:

If you just look at the players they signed, I think they fit together quite well as a unit. Demeco, Joseph and Cushing are great defensive players along with the extremely underrated Troy Nolan and Danieal Manning. Watt was a great draft pick also.

3-4 scheme works better than a 4-3 in my opinion against the attacking style offenses (for what it's worth :) ). They've built secondary & line depth while amassing some great LB talent.

We need to draft the BDPA this coming draft and my only personal exception would be if Blackmon falls into our laps

I would love to have a 3-4 defense again, but afraid of how Charles Johnson, Greg Hardy, Jon Beason, and James Anderson will transition.

I think Hardy (In particular), Beason, & Norwood would benefit a lot but am open to hearing why not.

I agree with JA & CJ though

Texans were much like the 9ers, a lot of veteran talent. Got a break this year with the demise of the Colts. They are taking advantage, but not like they've totally sucked in recent history though. About .500 over the last 4 years.

The Texans, like the Packers are proof however you can switch to a 3-4 defense and enjoy instant success.

Defense in general is predicated on great linebackers. Most defenses struggle without goods ones. In McDermott's scheme they make or break the defense. If we had Beason and Davis starting we would be much better. As it is, we need to draft one or two great ones next year and honeslty this defense will get better in a hurry with Beason back and a FA beast at Sam while we develop the future.

That's for sure

Bradley and Co. in Philly are a perfect example of a less than stellar LB crew in a McD run defense

One caveat: When switching to a 3-4, the Packers and the Texans hired two of the best to ever call a 3-4 in Capers and Wade Phillips. Knowing how to call a 3-4 is very important.

    • Difference between you and I here on this convo….is you only acknowledge PFF.   It’s hyper fixation from folks that get creative  and blinders to the rest.  Put that one website to the side, and all the other aspects we use to declare what top 10 looks like wouldn’t put Bryce in that type talk.
    • What it tries to do is grade each player individually IMO. If XL drops a nice pass it tries to make it not hurt the player than threw the pass and if on a similar pass a WR like DK makes a leaping one handed catch it tries to even out how much credit the QB gets vs the WR. Yeah it has grey areas because some of it can fall under opinion despite them using specific measurements and charts to justify their definitions. Like it or not PFF isn’t going anywhere. Analytics are trending up right now.
    • I’m getting 2 of 7 off his passing chart that day for balls that traveled at least 20 yards in the air.   And 20 yards in the air is largely the consensus of a deep ball.   that’s why I keep saying people are just running with a headline.  Because his best in the week deep declaration is based off a 2 of 7 day.  PFF is declaring him best off the day and using plays like a 50/50 jump ball to AT that went incomplete to build it.  That week was full of guys that factually were better deep…..everywhere but PFFs website.  Lamar, Stafford, Nix and on and on were all better in reality that week.  Hell, Mahomes in that same game.   PFF basically does a what if alternate reality on those deep throws.  So the volume of just throwing up a jump ball aids the PFF stat pending it’s a good 50/50 ball.
