DTs, CBs, & OLBs -- gathering the field

Even if good old nose tackle Ron Edwards comes back from injury, Fua (especially) & McClain haven't shown me enough this year at all. I just haven't seen the development, but I do agree that DTs take a little while to grow into their position.

So in light of this, here's my take on my top DTs and CBs (OLBs upcoming). Feel free to add on and propose who you think would fit our type of defense best:

--DTs--

Brandon Thompson (DT - Clemson) 6-2 / 310

Brandon-Thompson.jpg

The thing I like most about Thompson is that he finishes strong. Gets going towards the vital points in games and knows how to finish a season. He's worked with some great supporting talent but he's shown this year he was a big part in why that Clemson line has been so good. Best aspect of Thompson's game is his ability to stop the run which makes him a great option imo.

Devon Still (DT-DE Penn State) 6-5 / 311

DEVONSTILL2.jpg

He's been mentioned a few times in here recently and its totally warranted. His ability to simply shove linemen out of the way is great and he's having a stellar season so far. Another solid solid prospect and one that I think makes sense especially given his flexibility and our style defense.

Alameda Ta'amu (NT - Washington) 6-3 / 330

This kid has a motor but needs to work on his movement and proper containment. Since Ron is a NT along with one of our new 3rd rounders, he may not get many looks but if he finishes the season strong and can show a lot in draft prep, he could be a solid trade down prospect.

& Keep an eye on...Derek Wolfe (DT - Cincinnati) 6-5 / 302

A big reason Cinci has become a consistent squad in recent years even though he plays in the lackluster Big East. My favorite mid-round DT prospect so far.

--CBs--

Morris Claiborne (CB - LSU) 6-0 185

My top pick for us in this draft so far. I've mentioned before, this kid reminds me a lot of Eric Davis. We need a guy who has top speed and is tight in coverage. We need more reliable guys when we step outside of our zone defense and better tacklers for our zone. he fits both and is an absolute stud.

Dre Kirkpatrick (CB - Alabama) 6-3 190

dre-kirkpatrick-2-smaller.jpg

Considered the top CB on most boards and has great size for the wideouts in our division but I simply think Claiborne fits us better. Both are game changer types though. He hits harder than most cornerbacks but at the same time has good on field discipline and doesn't seem to over pursue much.

Jayron Hosley (CB - Virginia Tech) 5-10 175

jayron-hosley

Fiery, unreal leaping ability, and probably the quickest reflexes in the draft. Can return punts and is very solid overall when he plays on ST.

i reallllly don't want more youth and inexperience on the Dline.

understandable. I'm just trying to get all of the names out there. You never know what that crazy sumbeach Hurney will do come draft day...well for the most part

And guys, feel free to put some info & clips of the players you're mentioning

--LBs--

Donta Hightower (LB - Alabama) 6-4 260

-Finalist for the Butkus Award

Recent update from Walter Football:

"Hightower is having a fine season for Alabama. He has been a tough, in-the-box defender and has increased his splash plays. Hightower has shown the ability to be a dangerous blitzer as well. He has 66 tackles with 8.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks, one interception and three passes batted away in nine games this season. Hightower played well against LSU and has had big games against other SEC opponents. "

Ronnell Lewis (OLB/DE Oklahoma) 6-2 244

He may be more fitting for a strictly 3-4 defense, but I think he could do well with what Rivera is trying to put in place...the problem: he just got injured. Hopefully he can come back quick and show his toughness before the year ends. He's played really well thus far.

...and my favorite Linebacker other than Brown--

Lavonte David (OLB Nebraska) 6-1 216

Lavonte-David.jpg

He needs to bulk up for the NFL but he plays with absolute fire. Issue is that our FO may not look at him as a guy who can fit our system but he could be a Derrick Brooks type. I'm not trying to compare the two, but in my mind he could become a very stellar olb in the right place.

Casey Hayward (CB - Vandy) 5-11 185

AXA020101002_001_Vanderbilt_at_UConn.jpg

Played basketball, football, track & field through the years. He is a very well balanced CB with strong instincts. I would consider him very elusive and a great pick if we can get him in round 2.

Missing the best CB in the draft, IMO...Casey Hayward from Vandy.

Him and Chase Minnifield are very solid prospects I definitely could see us ending up with

...and If Cliff Harris wasn't such a baffoon, I'd like him

Chase Minnifield:

This is actually a really nice vid

Yea, I'm a fan of Minnifield. At this point, I'd be happy with him in the 2nd. I still like Harris in the 2nd too, if he can just get some damn insurance for his car.

Brandon Thompson is also slipping a bit and might be available in the 2nd. Would be a solid pick.

I'd absolutely love Minnifield in the 2nd, but he is projected a late 1st round pick, at worst high 2nd round.. if we are picking #8-12... there is no way we get him. Same thing with Hosley.. I don't think they will be there #8-12 in the 2nd round.

    • Here is how Morgan is strategic-He re-signs Scott because he was not going S in round 1--he had the chance, and he did not.  He saw the top of the draft at T and knew none of them would be ready to start day 1, so he signs a veteran to a one-year deal, giving his tackle selection a chance to learn and prepare for what might be LT or RT.  Those two moves suggested, perhaps ironically because they contradict each other, what he was going to do, based on the talent pool.  He never brought in a Robinson replacement at DE/NT, and then moves up to draft one.   I almost wonder if the intent was to draft DT/DE all along at some point, maybe with a trade back, but then Freeling dropped to them.   Of course, we felt that they were looking WR, and wonder if the plan was to draft a WR in round 2 if you traded back in round 1.  However, when Freeling was there, the trade back fell apart.  Then we traded up for Hunter.  We could stick with XL and hope Metchie steps up, so we sat still in round three and took Brazell II, a 1000 yard speedster and perfect Z WR.  What a break. At that time, CB and Center were our biggest needs, and with several possible centers on the board and a good fit for our defense at CB, we grabbed Will Lee III.  Lee and Thornton have people in front of them, but I think Morgan knew we needed a guy who can play the outside and press--and probably step in as Jackson's replacement in 2027.    After making trades to get back into the fifth round, where we grabbed one of the best centers in the draft.  This is significant because we signed Fortner to a one-year deal; maybe Morgan saw what some of us saw--the center position is strong in this draft--on day 3, and day 3 players need a year, in most cases.  Moments later, a safety they had been talking to whose skill set matched what we are looking for in a FS.  As stated, Scott was signed,  but the fact that the Panthers were talking to Wheatley and not Theiemann means that they might have known they were not going FS early, but would need a developmental FS later--which explains why we signed Scott.  So if you pay attention to the one-year, vet deals, you can tell where we planned to sign later-round, developmental players.  What positions did we draft early that did not have 1-year veterans signed in front of them:  DL (Hunter) and WR (I don't count Metchie because I count starting-level players). I would not be surprised to learn later that the plan was DT and WR in rounds 1 and 2--then Freeling fell.  Notice that Freeling--from Mt Pleasant SC, did not come in for a visit.  Most of the other OT candidates had short arms or were certain to be gone. I don't think Freeling was in their plans.  I think a trade back and Hunter and maybe Boston was the vision.  I am guessing that CB was also high on their list.   So in this draft, we got
    • This is one area I think that is not getting enough exposure in the midst of all the optimism. I like Chuba a great deal from a personal standpoint but he has largely proven nothing on a consistent basis yet. He's had the one season of production but before that most people pegged us as moving on. And last year injuries or not he just did not have that juice. The rest of the guys are completely unproven. I don't see anyone among the group having a game or a handful of games worth of high level production the way Rico Dowdle did last year. And yeah he dropped off and yeah he got an attitude about our incompetent handling of the touches which was honestly justified on his part and he moved on but he did legitimately save our season. That's what it is going to take to seize control of the NFC South. We all know that we will not be passing all over defenses. It is what it is. So who amongst this RB group is capable of doing that? And if we are struggling to run the ball AND pass are we going to revert to making excuses for our coach and QB again? That is definitely getting old.
