Week 11 updated statistics

Otherwise known as the PFFL/Truedat hijack thread . Here are the stats and my comments if you are interested.

Football Outsiders DVOA (their version of efficiency:

Offense: 7th (up from 8th)

Defense: 32nd (down from 31)

Special Teams: 31st (up from 32)

Here are some important offensive stats first:

Yards per drive: 7th (up from 8th)

Points per drive: 11th (up from 14th)

TDs per drive: 10th (up from 12th)

Punts per drive: 9th (up from 12th of course turnovers can actually help this)

Turnovers per drive: 27th :nonod:

Starting Field position: 23rd

Drive success rate (three and outs): 8th

Offensive YPP (for PFFL ;)): 25th (unchanged)

Here is what this tells me and gets me excited about our offense. We are 27th in TOs per drive and 23rd in starting field position and still manage to be in the top 10 in TDs per drive. So once Cam finally starts to feel comfortable, improves his mechanics, and is able to better understand what he is seeing before and after the snap so he can make quicker and better decision this offense will become elite. In my opinion it isn't a matter of if but when. Unfortunately, that when may be 2 or 3 years down the road.

Now for the bad part. Defense :(

Yards per drive: 32nd

Points per drive: 32nd

TDs per drive: 32nd

Forced punts per drive: 31st

TOs per drive: 20th

Defensive starting field position: 21st

Drive success rate (three and outs): 32nd

Normally I would stop there but the further you look the worse it gets.

Points allowed per game: 27th

Yards allowed per game: 27th

Third down stops: 30th

Penalty yards: 23rd-tie

Pass Completion percentage against: 29th

QB rating against: 30th

Rushing yards per game: 30th

Rushing TDs allowed: 32nd

Rushing yards per attempt: 27th

Defensive YPP (for PFFL ;)): 30th

You can't spin this anyway except that our defense is abhorrent. I like to look at things on a possession by possession basis because I believe it is more reflective of how that particular part of the team is performing on each drive. And being 32nd or 31st in all the major categories (points per drive, TDs per drive, yards per drive, punts forced per drive, and three and outs) is really discouraging.

It is like we took last year and stood it on its head. Last year we had an average defense, maybe even slightly above average, but our offense was ranked at or near the bottom of ever meaningful stat. This year our offense is above average but our defense is at or near the bottom of every meaningful stat. How the hell does that happen?

Anyway off to be with the family for Thanksgiving so everyone have a great turkey day.

PS- In before the PFFL/Truedat hijack :troll:

I suspect a stat manipulator could somehow make this look like the offense is at fault, but you will have a hard time convincing anyone who actually watches a game of ours that the defense isn't the biggest issue. I had some hope for them after they played decently in the first half last week. But the second half collapse was the worse I have seen since I started watching them which was 1995. The only silver lining right now is that with so many guys on IR from the defense, it is giving lots of players extended work and when the starters return these guys will be very good backups capable of starting. Our rotations should be very good next year.

What is sad though is that I am talking about next year already and it isn't even December yet.:(

and people want us to take a WR with our 1st pick...smh

Weak DTs in the draft and we just need to get healthy at LB.

Passing offenses need great recievers. Steve Smith is getting older.....and if he goes down the offense can't function. Need to find his future replacement the guy who will ultimately be Cam's #1 WR. Steve Smith won't be Cam's go to guy for his career.....Smitty is too old and Cam has too many potential years to go.....

Gettis, LaFell, Legadu, and the other scrubs don't have elite #1 WR potential. Need to go get that guy considering where we are drafting and the talent that will be avaliable. If there was a stud D lineman it we would draft him...but there isn't one.

Gross is still a fairly young LT. Don't need to replace him. Goes back to similar logic as to why giving Williams a new deal didn't make sense considering our weaknesses and current RB depth heading into the year. Other moves could make us better.

We are still operating under the live and die by Steve Smith motto. They was okay when we were a running team......not anymore.

    • I'll toss my 2 pennies(rip) into this. I was not a fan of the Dan hire, I'd say 80against/20meh. The right hand stuff and being a part of what I viewed as the sorriest panther team in history...... The deal is some of the first moves he did saved NOTHING in cap space. He waived Bozeman, Vonn Bell, and Hurst.....That to me doesn't feel like Firererererere was listening to Dan to a high degree. Dan didn't have a 1st rounder which was 1st overall due to the supreme suckage. He didn't have 2nd rounder this past year which was a early pick right where the talent of the 2025 was. Plus the cap was not in the best shape.... The QB deal was in deep water as well. If you factor this extreme mess and analyze the current OL, DL, WR, and RB groups..... I have. Use your normal realistic cues. Even without playing the first game of this season, you must see improvement, right?? He simply could not fix all the problems, but the problems he choose to tackle... He did so like it was the 2003 Superbowl all over again. Factor in depth and age, those groups check the difficult boxes. Most of the players are young, locked in contracts, and there *should* be depth behind the starters. He's not going to bat 1.000, his mistakes have been pointed out numerous times. IMO, he does need some props for what I feel he's done right. Trade wise he's been killing the value side- extra future 2nd, starter level CB that's 28 year old for 240 picked LB that's bounced around the league, and moved up without giving the classic herniay future picks to land two edges whom are only behind QBs on the most valued chart. He also got a early 2nd and 2 5ths for a 8 sack-a-year edge that got nearly 30 mill per.  Sure its got to play out and positive results are needed. Still if you know NFL and been watching since the herniay&gettlegut eras, you got to feel the process is on the up and up. Im not talking in typical off-season hopuim fluff either.... It's not over by any means either(please give him until the 2026 season end), maybe this is a real foundation in the making, us Panthers don't even know what that is...... This could be the first real long lasting winner than us fans have never had in 30 years and we are witnessing it....
    • I feel like we have some depth; we just need that proven nickel. Mike Jackson is a decent #2, but ideally we'd have a proven veteran in the slot. Smith-Wade might be able to fill that role, but he's far from a sure thing.
    • Todd mcshay is doing a deep dive each week on the top propects.  Although he likes manning as a top guy he doesnt think he is coming out but he absolutey raves about Cade, Sellers and Garrett n.   Cade is the jack of all trades, does everything kindof well, Garrett is the big game hunter that has pin point accuracy, and sellers is the wildcard, the tools and arm is simply off the chart.  So adding in Manning and allar this class has unreal potential
