So who is starting on D next year who is currently on the team?

DE: Charles Johnson

NT: Ron Edwards

UT:

DE: Greg Hardy

SLB: James Anderson

MLB: Jon Beason

WLB:

CB: Chris Gamble

SS: Charles Godfrey

FS:

CB:

That is my vote for returning starters. We will draft a starter on D in the top 10 this year. That leaves three starters we need to find along with depth.

yeah we're basically looking at having to upgrade 4-6 starting spots on defense with no cap space and only 2 early draft picks

given that you'll probably see hardy keep his starting spot. also I wouldn't be surprised to see the panthers FO just crossing their fingers hoping edwards and davis can both return from injury and more or less just leave those positions as is.

there's only so much you can do in one offseason given the situation. we're not in a position to make a run at any decent FAs and it's highly unlikely some 4th-7th round rookie is going to come in and play at a starting level right away

hopefully we hit big on our first two picks, guys come back healthy and we can at least make some positive moves (restructures/cuts) to get our cap space in order for the future.

theres always moves you can make to improve the team i'm just not going to expect some major overhaul of the roster or a huge influx of talent

I honestly don't think the secondary is the big problem. Martin has looked bad and we don't have a particularly strong CB corps but the true problem is we get gashed in the run and the line isn't getting to the QB. I still think the DT position has been a huge problem and the injuries at LB made it glaringly obvious.

Hardy hasn't earnt a starting position?

Adjusted post game stats from ProFootballFocus excluding week 17:

Charles Johnson

10 Sacks

6 Hits

32 Pressures

1 Batted Pass

26 Tackles

26 Defensive Stops

Greg Hardy

4 Sacks

8 Hits

33 Pressures

8 Batted Passes

37 Tackles

29 Defensive Stops

Hardy needs to improve his run play, but I really am confused at why you move Johnson to RE when he was unreal against the run last year.

Comparing the two as pass rushers simply shows that they are just as effective as each other...

Based off of talent, these are the only players who should have a starting spot.

DE - Johnson

SLB - Anderson

MLB - Beason

CB - Gamble

S - Godfrey

I like Hardy, but he's absolutely horrible in sealing the edge and has no discipline when it comes to defending his gap and responsibility. Which means he's a third down pass rushing specialist.

Now based on probability and so forth

You'll see Johnson, Hardy, Edwards, Anderson, Beason, Gamble, Hogan and Godfrey starting.

    • Not sure why everyone keeps talking about the Panthers paying him $50M/year. I don't recall anyone EVER saying he deserves that. I think something like what the Dolphins signed Malik Willis to would be good: 3 years, $67.5M but it will probably be something along the lines of Mayfield or Darnold which is around $35M/year.
    • Actually that 4400 was based on a 16 game season to match Bryce's 16 games this year. Your offense has to be to drive the ball when it matters. Bryce doesn't do that with any level of consistency. If you're building a team that isn't focused on your QB, then fine. Then there's no need to pay Bryce as a franchise QB because literally anyone else will do. If you're going to pay him 50m plus per season, you have to be able to put the team on his shoulders and know he's going to carry the load. So far, when the pressure is on to get it done, Bryce has fallen miserably short of the target. 4-6 to finish out the season and 0-2 when all we need is a win to secure a playoff spot isn't stepping up and proving yourself as a franchise QB. I'd say it's quite the opposite.  There isn't a single coach in this league that would take Bryce over Burrow and very few if any that would take Bryce over Prescott. Hurts didn't have to throw in 2025 because Philly's defense was disgusting and Saquan had a MVP season. But then again, Hurts has shown that he can when it counts, and then there's his signature. Philly runs the tush push to lethal perfection, but that's a play we can't even consider with Bryce. You used 3 QBs from teams that had no defense to show QB stats don't always matter. When we had the worst defense in the NFL, we didn't see Bryce step up and carry the offense and put up gaudy numbers in a losing season because we were playing catch up. It was pretty much the opposite.  What have we seen from Bryce consistently to consider offering him a top 10 NFL franchise QB level contract? At the end of the day, that's all that matters.
    • I mean, what fanbase has high expectations when you have a QB like Bryce leading your team?
