Was Walter Payton the best running back in NFL history??

To answer your question, no, we will never have a RB as good as Walter, but I've seen some of his style in both of our guys. He's an excellent person to emulate and I've got to say that Stew has reminded me of him in power situations.

Turner at the goal line sometimes reminds me of watching Jim Brown a bit. Seeing him bowl over Vilma multiple times at the goal line is just awesome.

I'm just curious. It's sad that I just learned that he existed a few weeks ago when I was researching some nfl history. Adrian Peterson sort of reminds me of him, just amazing what ive seen through highlight videos and nfl films anyways.

And did dwill pick the number 34 because of Payton? Do you think we will ever have a running back as good as a Walter Payton?

*Note: I'm only 20 years old, so he had been retired for a few years already before I was born. I was especially wondering if any of you had a chance to see him in person.

AP is much more like Eric Dickerson....read up on him too.

While you are at it, add Fred Biletnikoff, Rod Woodson, Gene Upshaw, Larry Czonka, Franco Harris, Derrick Thomas, and Reggie White.

Those are just a few very interesting players.

I am only 23, but I learned of there greatness through NFL films. I used to marathon through NFL films and I learned quite a few players and I learned about quite a few important and historic games.

my favorite RBs to watch growing up (not necessarily in order)...

eric dickerson

john riggins

earl campbell

walter payton

franco harris

oj simpson

i loved barry sanders, though. i was in my 20s for most of his career so i don't consider that growing up. sanders may have been the most exciting to watch, but a lot of it had to do with the lions sucking so bad. they could never open anything up for him so he had to scramble all over the place to find his holes.

IMHO, I think Sweetness was the best football player to ever play in the NFL, not just runningback. He could run through you, around you or jump over you... and also was a pretty good thrower of the ball as well.

Damn you, Ditka, for giving Sweetness's Super Bowl TD to the Fridge.

You could make a pretty good argument for that, though the NFL chose Jerry Rice for their "greatest ever" list.

What I always loved about Payton was that he punished the guys who tackled him rather than being the one on the receiving end of all the pain.
