Coaching move rule question

OK, thought that a team could not deny a coach a chance to interview for a position that would be a promotion.

But this:

The Steelers denied Butler the chance to interview for the Arizona Cardinals' defensive coordinator position last season. However, Butler's contract expired after this season, allowing Butler to interview for other jobs without the Steelers blocking any move.

So, what is the rule on this?

the rule is unless the promotion is to HC, a team can deny an interview for a coordinator or assistant coach under contract. Whether it's a lateral move (DC to DC) or a promotion (LB coach to DC). The only thing they don't have the power to deny is an interview for a HC vacancy.

between the end of a team's season and march 1(?) no team can deny another team permission to talk to their coach about a promotion. after that date in march teams are allowed to deny permission.

also, if you allow one team a chance to interview your coach you can't deny any other team permission. e.g., if you gave permission to the bills to talk to shula about taking over their OC job there and then the bucs came asking permission you would have to grant it. you can't pick and choose who you let talk to your coaches. permission to one is permission to all.

Head-Coaching Opportunity. If a club is interested in discussing its head

coaching position with an assistant coach whose playing season (excluding Pro

Bowl) is over, and who is contractually obligated to another club, the assistant

coach’s employer club must permit the coach the opportunity to discuss, and

possibly accept, such employment through March 1 of any year. After March 1,

the employer club is under no obligation to grant such permission, but it may be

voluntarily granted at the employer club’s discretion during the off-season.

This applies to HC opportunities only, not all promotions. So Raging Bull's answer combined with your clarification on timing provides the complete answer.

You can deny assistant coaches under contract interviewing for any assitant coaching vacancy with another team. No one really denies any HC interviews, and even those can be denied but no one does it because it could happen to them.

Right?

No. Other than post-March 1st as outlined in Rayzor's post above, you cannot deny a request for one of your staffers to interview for head coach. You can deny anything other than for HC, whether it is a promotion or not.

    • I have said if you out even an average QB into the offense we are averaging 25+ points a game. But that will never happen with Bryce under center.
    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
