Feb. 20 - Teams can begin applying franchise and transition tags to players

Feb. 22-28 - NFL Combine (live coverage on NFL Network and NFL.com)

March 5 - Deadline for teams to apply franchise and transition tags

March 13 - Free agency begins at 4 p.m.

March 25-28 - NFL owners meetings (in Palm Beach, FL)

March 30-31 - Super Regional Combine (at Ford Field)

Mid-April - Lions' offseason program begins (they can hold a maximum of 10 OTAs during the offseason)

Late April - 2012 NFL schedule is announced

April 26 - First round of 2012 NFL Draft (Lions will pick 23rd)

April 27 - Second and third rounds of 2012 NFL Draft

April 28 - Rounds 4-7 of 2012 NFL Draft

Late July - Training camps across the league begin

Early August - 2012 preseason begins

Sept. 6 - 2012 NFL regular season begins at stadium of Super Bowl champion

February 20: Franchise Tag

Teams can apply a franchise tag on one of their free agents, preventing that player from signing with a new team. That player will receive the average of the top-five salaries at his position, all of which will be guaranteed. There are various levels of franchising — exclusive and non-exclusive — that could allow another team to acquire that player but usually at such a cost (losing draft selections) that teams generally avoid.

February 22-28: NFL Combine

The annual NFL Combine in Indianapolis will kickoff on Wednesday, February 22, showcasing this year’s top prospects. Coverage will be live on NFL Network and NFL.com.

March 5: Deadline to Apply The Franchise Tag

If teams fail to use their franchise tag on a player by this date, then that player will be available for free agency.

March 13: Free Agency Begins At 4 p.m.

At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, the new league year begins and free agency kicks off, allowing unrestricted free agents to sign with any team they wish. If a team tenders a restricted free agent, then the level of that tender dictates the compensation for the original team if another team signs that player to an offer. Exclusive-rights free agents will be unable to sign with a new team no matter what if the original team tenders that player a deal.

March 25-28: NFL Owner’s Meeting

Pretty self-explanatory.

March 30-31: Super Regional Combine

Much like the National Combine in late February, the Super Regional Combine invites players that attended NFL Regional Combines, giving prospects that did not take part during the National Combine in Indianapolis an opportunity to conduct drills in front of all 32 teams.

April 26-28: 2012 NFL Draft

The first round will start on April 26, with the second and third rounds taking place on April 27 and the final four rounds on April 28.

Late July: Training Camp Begins

The Cincinnati Bengals will kickoff the 2012 Training Camp at Paul Brown Stadium.

September 6: Regular Season Kicks Off

The New York Giants will launch the new season, hosting a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Some speculate that it’ll be the New Orleans Saints.

This is the first date that mentions restricted free agents and it makes it sound like a team can not even tender the RFA until free agency starts. In the past, the tenders were allowed to placed a few days before free agency began. Has this changed?

      Can we get to 9-8?

      A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.

      I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.

      Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
