Why is the thought of Manning staying with the Colts unheard of?

Radio this afternoon, I think the Scott Van Pelt show? So, it seems a 'lock' that the Rams trade their 2nd round overall pick. Dish to Cleveland they can still get Blackmon.

What's 'new' to me is they were talking THREE first round picks for the 2nd overall...at the minimum.

OK - so figure Manning has 3-5(?) years left in him, thats 3-5 years of arguably the best QB to ever play. Resign Manning, trade the pick, stockpile the draft - worry about your franchise QB in a few years.

-This way you are automatically back in the hunt.

-You get the goodwill of keeping Manning.

Yes - there is the unknown of how bad his neck is - but this guy has been a warrior right? Isn't this the first season he missed a start??

I know everyone is saying Luck is all that and a bucket of fried cheese, but I ALSO remember them saying the same about Leaf. Luck is unknown - he might be, heck probably will be great - but it just seems cRzY to not resign Manning and get a ton of great picks.

So if you put your Colts GM hat on...what do you do?

it's not unheard of, but it's also HIGHLY unlikely and borderline dumb.

no guarantee you would have a chance to draft not just one but a choice of two incredible blue chip QBs with tons of potential and you could feel good about having as your franchise QB for the next 10-15 years vs. 2-3 years that you hope your QB isn't paralyzed because someone sneezed on him.

most important thing for a rebuilding franchise (which is what the colts are if you are paying attention) is a franchise QB that you can build on. both luck and RG3 offer that. peyton does not.

also, the money that peyton is due next year is what the entire contract would be worth for either of those guys. actually he's due more. i think it's $28mil? the entire 5 year contract for a rookie QB taken first overall next year won't be over $24mil.

if i'm the new GM working with the new coach and i've got a ton of players on the team that are over 30 (which is the case) then you better believe that i'm going to start over with the most important part of the puzzle and use the money that i don't have to spend on my old and questionable QB on talent to put around him. I'm going to try and use that money to bring in the talent on offense that can help him succeed.

if you don't have a franchise QB, your first priority is to get one. right now the colts don't have a franchise QB anymore. they have an old QB that if he can play at all next year will likely only be able to play for another couple years that is due a ton of money.

If I personally was in the Colts' position, the possibility of keeping Manning would exist. Not sure why they made this decision, but from the looks of it theres a 99% chance they deal/cut Manning and take Luck. Manning is even having issues with utilizing the teams facilities - not a good sign for his future there.

Well I guess true wisdom says, throw away your much proven QB for one who is mostly draft scouts hyped because you assuming that the hyped QB will give you the same amount of success and years as the one you have now.

One thing about the way Peyton is treated both by the media and the Colts is, there is NO loyality at all in the NFL. Don't care how much you were once a "chosen QB."

Here's hoping if the Colts let Peyton go he ends up with a team that will against the Colts and stump their asses for the next 2-3 years or however long he may have to play.

How exactly have the media been disloyal to Peyton?

Draft Luck, Trade Peyton to Redskins, Jets, or Chiefs for their 1st, draft best available OT/WR...or Richardson if available.

If they cut him, trading him is out of the question. And no team can take on that contract anyways. That is why he will be cut and sign with a team which may or may not be the Colts.

If they didn't have the #1 pick then I could sweep them rolling the dice on Manning... Maybe. But with that pick and the ability to take a guy that almost universally seems to be a sure fire franchise QB, why would they pay Manning $28 million now and more later when they're not sure he'll be the guy anymore... I sure wouldn't.

    • okay I found this and it sounds like my hopes for the first surgery being not such a great job seems like it could be actual reality.  I only hoped because that would give a better chance for recovery and ia a possible scenario so I just thought it could be possible. Had no real evidence of it. But I’ll be damned.    This is a detailed report of Brooks’ surgery and the condition of his knee after the failed repair.     https://x.com/jmthrivept/status/2055743129408704806?s= Sparked by some very good questions by @CoachspeakIndex, here’s some info on Jonathon Brooks: 1. Speculation that the first graft/ACLR by Dr. Cooper didn’t “take” or at least was too lax, leading to failure and re-tear. Brooks dealt with issues cutting, progressing in his rehab into the early stages of 2024 and then re-tore it late 2024, requiring a second ACLR in January 2025 (essentially revision). Notably, CAR prolonged Brooks’ rehab process through Sept-Oct due to issues progressing into the next stages of rehab. 2. Second surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has extensive experience with revisions. He did a double bundle technique, harvesting graft from Brooks’ left patellar tendon and a strip of his right IT Band (his right patellar tendon had been utilized for the prior graft in 2023. The double bundle technique significantly increases rotational stability of the knee, leading to a stronger and more secure graft/reconstruction. Also to note, Brooks’ surgery wasn’t significantly delayed, meaning that the tunnels from his prior ACLR were in good shape and they didn’t need to perform bone grafts to fill in (would have delayed 2nd surgery by 5-6 months). Essentially, reading the tea leaves tells me that everything else except for the graft itself was still in good quality within his knee. Good sign for future.  3. Typically, you see a performance increase anywhere from 16-20 months post-revision. Brooks will be ~21 months out from his second surgery by the time Week 1 hits. His knee should be more stable and stronger this time around, with adequate time for healing and return to all movement patterns. I’m not viewing this situation as a typical “Player __ had TWO ACL tears, he’s cooked” situation. Rather, I’m viewing it as the first procedure failed, but the second procedure is significantly stronger and should allow him to return to form this time around. I don’t know why it posted as a link but there it is.
    • Jackie, any more reps tomorrow, or is that it for this session?  thanks for the work
    • How can you say they aren’t trying to win now with all the moves made in free agency? Or is trading first round picks the only way to be win now? I’d be fine never trading another first round pick again, win now be damned.
