So here's a little tidbit that ought to bring a smile to your face.

Apparently the Saints, knowing the league was upset, had already put in place a contingency plan designed to help the team deal with the impending suspension of Sean Payton.

Wise move, right?

The problem: All their plans were based on the expectation that it would be a four game suspension that wouldn't have been in effect until September.

Saints were bracing for a four-game suspension for Payton

When the NFL initially cracked the case of the Saints’ bounty program, coach Sean Payton didn’t believe he’d be suspended at all. Once Payton appreciated the gravity of the situation, he understood a suspension was coming.

A league source tells PFT that Payton and the Saints specifically expected a four-game suspension. Per the source, a plan already had been concocted for getting the interim head coach ready to take the reins, and Payton would have hunkered down and spent the month preparing for the games to be played later in the season.

And so a full-season suspension was jarring to Payton and to the organization.

Florio goes on to argue that team leadership was dumb to not at least consider the possibility that it might have been longer. He also points out that given what happened, it actually could have been even worse.

So now, not only do we know that the punishment is going to be a painful one; we also know that the Saints organization thought they were well-prepared for it...

...but it turns out they really weren't :lol:

It doesn't surprise me they underestimated the penalties, they have consistently ignored the warnings about the bounties and ignored the comissioner's office mandates to turn things around for years. is it any wonder that they made light of the seriousness of the punishments as well?

Somehow 55 thousand pages of documents were going to be overturned by simply saying that he was sorry. Sean is an arrogant man who has consistently done what he wanted and felt that his status and a super bowl win apparently made him invulnerable to consequences. Now he is being brought down to earth. It seems nothing but this type of serious punishment will point out to the Saints the seriousness of their transgressions. They still seem to not get it. While acknowledging publically that they were wrong, internally they still had no clue how much trouble they were in. I guess they do now.

I'm still very interested to see what the players union does. Why any union would want to keep members that conspired to harm other members would be beyond me. It will be fascinating to watch what they do and how they rationalize not kicking them out if that's the route they take.

so through an unnamed source, let's call him "total bullshit I just made up," the saints were planning for their suspension to only be twice as bad, at most, as the last time a coach was suspended, and as such were planning someone to be a replacement.

You really think he had an actual source for that? Or that it's just common fuging sense and people like you you have bought into the idea that Florio knows anyone in the nfl?

I respect florio in a way, since he's proven you don't actually have to have any talent or knowledge about the nfl to be successful in it if you just post enough, a lesson you've obviously taken to heart and practice every thread.

We all know you're bland as hell and you get your kicks from boring us to death with paper bricks of "analysis." Somehow, you always manage to lower the bar for yourself.

I look forward to your next thread from walterfootball or some nonsense.

I'm still very interested to see what the players union does. Why any union would want to keep members that conspired to harm other members would be beyond me. It will be fascinating to watch what they do and how they rationalize not kicking them out if that's the route they take.

I agree, I want to see the bullshit excuses too. Brees appear to be in the clear as of now though. Not sure about the defense.

With Sean having to have complete control over the offense, they not only lost the head coach but basically the Offensive Coord also. Sure they will have the same offense but that timely play calling (right play at the right time) will be gone.

And if Brees holds out because his coach isnt gonna be there .... that will be a huge win for the whole NFL

If you think he punishement was harsh ( i did initially) ...read that entire PFT article that pretty much timelines everything and summarizes it in detail. ZERO sympathy for them, especially after they got warned and the NFL didn't say anything pubicly.

You think this is light punishment?

They don't draft until the third this year.

Their coach and play caller has been banned from the league this year and hit with what is basically an 8 million dollar fine.

Their GM is going to miss the first half of the season, which is a massive hinderance when you think of everything a GM does in that time span. Trades, free agent acquisitions, contract extensions, all of that stuff can't be done. I'm sure you can think of some good examples of moves the Panthers have made once the season started.

There is one player on that team that matters, one who was pissed off about being on the franchise tag and who was five million dollars a year away from signing a contract extension. Now he's not only going to play without a long term contract, he's going to play without the guy calling the plays.

Greg Williams has been banned from the league.

And this is before the player suspensions. Vilma is likely done. Porter, Harper, and Smith are looking at suspensions.

The Saints have been fuged.

      No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.

      Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight

      There's a reason Greg Maddux was never a flamethrower but still one of the most feared pitchers of all time, because accuracy beats velocity far more often then vice versa. Once you exceed a certain minimum capability, you can thrive with extreme traits elsewhere, its not strictly about power in any sport but powerlifting.
