What Can We Do To Create More Cap Room?

Mare counts 3.2 million against the cap. If we cut him today it wil cost us 3.5 million in accelerated salary cap costs. If we make it a June 1st cut which means it doesn't count until Jun 1st, it will cost 1.75 million in dead cap space this year and the same dead cap space next year.

If we cut Edwards we save 300,000 dollars. I have no idea what Clausen's contract costs or saves us given he did not trigger the 900,000 roster bonus. Plus while it says he has 2.4 million guaranteed, I have no idea how that is parcelled out.

Extending Smitty and Gamble will free up a few mil.

Actually extending smitty could free up quite a bit as his signing bonus is only 1.5 million and he is a free agent next year. We could save 4 million or so. Gamble I don't think we can save that much as he is signed through 2014 and is still guaranteed 9 million.

I think in an old Clausen thread it was determined cutting him would save about a million in cap space.

    • Apparently CSW lost his starting job to Thornton last year. If he can stay healthy I bet Thornton keeps that NB position.
    • I member him staying after practices with only to see he was wearing heavy weight vest, one of his trademarks. He also put in 10 years, right? People forget he was the ST stud that called the snap and made sure everyone lined up right. He was one of the "glue" guys that bought his "lunch pail" to work.... He was a willing solider, all teams need a couple of them. He blocked for sooo many panthers RBs- Davis, lane, Williams, foster, goings and when there was huge injuries he took over the starter duties and had a couple 100 yard games. If you followed hoover, he took the perfect RB path cause he was just a slow heavy one himself....
    • Walker likely depends on a couple of things. What exactly did Dan promise him, to start with.  How much other interest he actually had for a starter job at high pay is another question. It isn’t outside the realm of possibility that he could stay on as a swing tackle waiting to take Moton’s spot when it opens.    I can’t get myself to consider Icky as a viable anything until we see him back on the field.     Hunt seems to be a team player and good guy but I don’t think he is worth what he is being paid. I have him tentatively earmarked for cap causality in the near future.
