Your Top 5 As Of 4/8

Good question. My board changed when I watched the video of Beason's 4/6 workout.

1. Floyd. (not that sold on Gettis and think we need to draft our #1 WR soon)

2; Ingram (If Coples turns out to be good, this is wrong. In fact, Floyd is wrong too--Ingram fits because he is not a Hardy clone and we are going to mix up defensive looks--the best athlete in the draft)

3. Coples (He could be great. I do not think he has the desire, however. Too many variables to know for sure)

4. Reiff (Our left tackle is 32 and we may not draft early enough to get one for a while. Otah is probably gone in 2013)

5. DeCastro (We need to get stronger up the middle. We have not done that yet. DeCastro is a smart and versatile interior lineman who could change the run game and protect Cam.

Consider three things...

-Best available/value

-What are positions of need

-And how both of those shape up later in the draft

I don't believe trading up is the answer. There are too many areas that could use some help. But that's a good thing, meaning we can take the best player available at almost any position.

RB Richardson: Yes, I would take him if he was there and trade J. Stewart.

WR Blackmon/Floyd: Yes, I would take a WR so that Cam has somebody constant that he could throw to for many years to come.

OG DeCastro: Ryan Kalil and DeCastro would be scary for years to come.

DT: Several options here.

DE Coples: I'd rather not, but mainly because there is depth in later rounds.

DE/OLB Ingram: I would take this guy and play him at SLB on running downs and DE on passing downs.

LB Kuechly: I'm not that impressed with him. But I wouldn't hate the pick to free up Beason and Davis/Anderson to make plays.

CB: I don't think the value is there at #9 unless Claiborne falls. But I wouldn't hate the pick.

S Barron: Could S. Martin and/or the newly acquired R. Smith play some CB? I doubt it, but it would be interesting to see.

I really like the idea of a DE or a CB in round 2. There will be somebody worth while to take there.

-Richardson won't be there. Taking him off my list.

-Unfortunately you have to take WR off the list because Blackmon will NOT be there, and Floyd is just too much of a risk for a top 10 pick. Are we here to gamble, or make the team better? We aren't in a position to gamble, yet. They're off my list.

-DeCastro would be good but it's just not ideal to take an OG in the top 10 no matter how good he is. OGs can be found later on. Off my list.

This leaves DT, LB, and being creative with players like Ingram or Barron.

1: Cox

2: Brockers

I chose Cox first because of his pass-rushing ability. I just don't see a DT on our roster that can be a good pass-rusher up the middle except McClain.

3. Ingram

I would get really creative with this kid.

4. Kuechly

If you think he can be your pro-bowl MLB, and move Beason to WLB... you would be in good shape. Anderson can start at SLB and Davis can come in sparingly to wreck some havoc.

5. Barron

When pick #9 rolls around, one of these DTs will be there. Take one of them. You'll start a run on DTs and you'll see a top DE or top CB in round 2. DE Curry, CB Jenkins, CB Robinson. +

    • My general take on the state of the team not going too in depth is this: Either Morgan or Canales (hard to say whether it’s the players or the system/coaching, and that goes for any team) has been responsible for considerable strides forward on D and a bit more productive offense, but it’s been a small sample size and we collapsed at the end of the year. I lean towards it being more Canales growing as a coach and building a culture of buy-in and getting the most out of players in the locker room. My reasoning for leaning there is that Morgan was part of the Fitterer stink and it’ll take him a while of sustained success in roster management to overcome that in my mind. Next year is a big year to see if that was a fluke or not. These big signings this offseason are exciting and sometimes teams can have amazing FA classes but more often than not those who spend big and “win the offseason” don’t show the results in the regular season.    As far as QB goes, in a vacuum I’m completely fine with the Pickett signing, he’s ok value for a backup and a huge improvement over Dalton. If Bryce went down there isn’t a huge drop off there and if the rest of the team builds on last year they could win games with him under center. I’m not sure the ‘85 Bears could win games with current Dalton under center. But the O is just so damn limited with Bryce and Pickett does not push him at all, he’s purely a backup. So I agree we I’d love to see a QB with some upside drafted, a guy who could actually push Bryce if/when he struggles or doesn’t improve any further. He’s improved steadily the last 2 years but it has been from arguably worst in league history to still below average. I’m not convinced he can get any better than purely average at absolute best. I hope he can man but I just don’t see it happening. And the longer we keep penciling him as starter the less confidence I have in this staff. Even with our unexpected relative success as a team last year sometimes you do have to take another step back to take a step forward, and that could mean moving on from Bryce, and temporarily going with a slightly worse player like Pickett while aggressively trying to upgrade the position and taking dart throws in the draft/free agency on upside players. I know, there wasn’t much available this offseason outside of Willis, and this draft class seems to be poor at QB. But I’d have preferred we try something and if it didn’t work and we took a step back then just keep trying until something hits. Rolling with Bryce is just delaying the inevitable and living in purgatory.    just my 2 cents, hope I’m proved wrong
    • His market value is 15.7 million. Not worth it to bring him at his age, at that price. If we were to bring in a veteran, DeAndre Hopkins is available for 2 million market value. I've said this in other threads, get Keenan Allen to play the slot. He's as good as a pass catching tight end and is market is under 7 million.
