Hurney Remains Adamant That We Are Fine At Dt (Bottom Line Interview)

I definitely hope that Kearse and Shirley remain on the team. Don't know if that will be possible with Fua, McClain, NeBlett, and Edwards. I doubt we have 6 DTs

From the text of that interview, it sounds like there in love with Kearse, I don't know how they feel about Shirley but I would like to keep them all somehow. Maybe stash some on the PS

Among other things, the discussion of not draft a Defensive Tackle came up. He said both he and Rivera have talked about it on numerous occasions and did not feel that DT was a position that needed to be addressed in the draft.

Yes, I typed that up, minus the pauses and 'uh's' ...be thankful.

Pie for not making me listen to Hurney's voice.

I'm skeptical too, BUT... this is either Hurney AND Rivera being stubborn, or they really see something that we don't on our DTs. We already know that Hurney can be stubborn. I don't think (and I don't know...) if that is Rivera's personality.

I know what I saw too....his 2 rookie DTs getting run over, game after game, until they both got injured and then suddenly, the backups were able to slow down the run.

Best players play. That 2 rookie DT was not the best rotation and he stayed with them, game after game after game.

One good thing, this year he can't use the, 'I'm a new, first time HC' excuse again. Class is over. Produce.

First, none of these guys are eligible for the PS.

If what he is saying is that he likes Neblett and Kearse and we are getting a good player back in Edwards, then I agree with him 100%.

If the plan is to go into camp with McClain starting in one spot, or they insist on using Fua extensively, then I have a problem with their evaluation. I still think we need another 3 tech to pair with Neblett. Use McClain sparingly, use Fua sparingly, and let them develop. To do this, we would have to carry 6 tackles, and that may not be feasible. Maybe only carry 2 QB's and find the spot there.

Someone needs to ask Hurney to rank the NFL defensive lines from around the league and see where the Panther's end up.. If they are anywhere near the bottom then an upgrade is/was needed.

If he ranked rookie DTs, you would be surprised.

Most rookie DTs suck. You can't compare them to veterans. They will not be rookies next year, and most growth at DT in the NFL occurs between year 1 and 2. We will have a competition and go with our top 4 or 5.

I honestly don't know what the requirements are for the PS...I think neblett played his way into being the starting 3 tech. But I do think they'll have a hard time deciding on playing time...do they play fua and McClain based on them spending 3rd round picks on them, or do they play kearse neblett and Shirley because of their production

We're counting on McClain, Fua and Kearse to continue to develop... to invest another high pick on a DT after investing two 3rd round picks on DT's last year would have been premature and just plain silly.

Speaking of silly, I think it's funny that folks want to get immediate help at DT by drafting one. If you want immediate help at DT you need to sign a vet, since most DT's take 2-3 years to grow into the position.

Its very telling of a posters age when they make a comment like that. Totally rational to expect a 22 year old rookie to take on 30 year old with 10 years of experience and weight training lol.

I remember thinking that when I was around 18 or 19 though so I cant talk poo.
