A Few Late Wednesday Updates Re: Rookies

Forgive me if this is common knowledge but, we've got 7 draft picks plus 12 undrafted free agents plus Manno, Sullivan, Nelson, Smith and Medlock which makes 24 players by my count.

Who are the other 26?

Players with less than one year of service, like Manno, they're using this rookie mini-camp as a tryout for some other FA's.

Rookie minicamp is an optional workout for all players, so it's more than likely just a random assortment of signed players.

I don't know if the vets are even allowed to go. Both Person and Gantt have said there will be around 25 players there on a tryout basis. Gantt also said they will have to bring in a qb to throw for all these rookies. I'm on my phone or I would link to twitter for quotes

Good article on this from the Panthers.com site: by Bryan Strickland

Rookie camp set to kick off

CHARLOTTE – Panthers coaches can't wait to see their seven draft picks at the team's rookie minicamp this weekend, but they could actually get to see around nine times that many players in action.

Nearly 60 players are eligible to take part in the three-day camp that kicks off Friday: the seven draft picks, 12 undrafted rookie free agents, seven veterans relatively speaking who don't have an accrued NFL season, and 32 players essentially trying out for the team.

"This gives us an opportunity to see what these guys are capable of," Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said. "It will give us a chance to observe our draft picks, to see how they are and where they are, and to see how they pick up our basic fundamentals. We'll also get to watch our guys from last year that are eligible, to see how they're progressing.

"We'll also get an opportunity to see our rookie free agents that we signed coming out of the draft, as well as a group of guys who are trying out that we're going to see if maybe they can help us out eventually."

First and foremost, the coaching staff is excited about seeing the fruits of their draft-related labor: linebacker Luke Kuechlyicon-article-link.gif, guard Amini Silatoluicon-article-link.gif, defensive end Frank Alexandericon-article-link.gif, wide receiver Joe Adamsicon-article-link.gif, cornerback Josh Normanicon-article-link.gif, punter Brad Nortmanicon-article-link.gif and safety D.J. Campbellicon-article-link.gif.

Panthers participating because they have less than a year of NFL experience include safety Jonathan Nelsonicon-article-link.gif – who intercepted a pass against Tampa Bay late last year – and offensive linemen Bryant Browningicon-article-link.gif and Jeff Byersicon-article-link.gif, who joined the 53-man roster from the practice squad late last season. The group is rounded out by two players who spent time on the Panthers' practice squad last season in tight end Greg Smithicon-article-link.gif and safety Reggie Sullivanicon-article-link.gif, and two players signed in the offseason in wide receiver Chris Mannoicon-article-link.gif and kicker Justin Medlockicon-article-link.gif.

The 12 undrafted rookie free agents include a pair of players many expected to be drafted in Tennessee running back Tauren Pooleicon-article-link.gif and Brigham Young offensive tackle Matt Reynoldsicon-article-link.gif.

One thing missing from those groups? Someone to throw the ball.

"But what we will have is a couple of guys who have been in NFL camps, one that has been with us before," Rivera said. "We're pretty excited about it."

The tryout players include a pair of quarterbacks in Dalton Bell and Jarrett Brown. The Panthers signed Bell as an undrafted rookie free agent out of West Texas A&M in 2007, and he's been in the Canadian Football League since 2008. Brown, who played collegiately at West Virginia, has spent time the past two seasons on practice squads with the San Francisco 49ers and Indianapolis Colts.

The rookie camp is taking place on the weekend per the Collective Bargaining Agreement because the rookie class is still in school. The camp comes in the midst of Phase Two of offseason workouts, a three-week period that began on April 30 in which coaches can provide individual instruction.

"That's been outstanding," Rivera said. "We've had an opportunity to spend a lot of time with our guys, to do a lot of group and individual work with the offense on one field and the defense on the other. We can see what everybody is retaining and how they're learning. Then in Phase Three, we'll get into the OTAs where we can do some offense against defense, and then we'll finish up with our minicamp."

Phase Three begins May 21, a four-week period that will culminate with a mandatory veteran minicamp June 12-14. Rookies also are allowed to participate.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth
    • The fact that this is even a discussion is a testament of the level of front office badassery that's going on.
    • Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
