Panthers Pressure Point: Sean Mcdermott

Recommended Posts

Because I saw what he did with Philadelphia's defense and his knowledge and style come from no other than all of fame defensive coordinator Joe Johnson.

When he took over, that D went downhill fast.

Again, I like the hire, but as of now, he is just a name. There has been no substance to him yet.

McD's deffense was pretty good his first year, they were killing other teams (us included). His second year he didn't have Trotter OR Dawkins who had been the heart of the eagles D for years. On top of that they had a rash of injuries to their LB corp ( who weren't very good anymore) and a crap secondary excluding Samuels. I believe with a healthy line up McD should be able to turn the D around. If he can't fix it with a healthy D then yes, it would be time to move forward.

I think McDermott was sacrificed in Philly to take the heat off Reid...weird situation over there. I don't think there were many personnel changes made to give the Eagles D a good chance to succeed in 2010 and after firing McD they have made all kinds of changes, so I'm willing to let him have a chance to improve here. Two years isn't a fair chance. Add Rivera basically stepping into a role as the HC/DC and I think McD will be fine.

I think that this is Rivera's Defense period. McDemott may be the D Coordinator, but Rivera has said on numerous occasions that he takes that side of the ball very personally. Rivera will have this D ready come week 1. McDermott is just there, helping out...Rivera will be calling the shots, and that's what will help me sleep better at night.

Jim Johnson. And what you saw was that defense go into the pooper when he took over.

Injury and talent were big issue that year in Philly. McD was a scapegoat to a degree.....and was in impossible shoes to fill replacing a legend

I would say he is an avg play caller. That's where he struggles.

He also has lacked the talent every season he has been a DC to run an aggressive blitz scheme.....which is what he knows

You are close to the answer you seek oh TruCatzFan. But I fear you have made an inaccurate assumption. Which has taken your journey off course. The key you seek is in the the amount of time a HC has to devote to other things besides football. Rivera has stated that he does not have the time needed to be an actual DC. He has now learned that he has more time than he first thought to spend on his passion. Which is, as we all know, DEFENSE.

So, although your answer may be close, I will will be smoking the cigar. You are correct that it is a Rivera D, and that no one knows it better than him. Rivera does seem to trust Mac, which leads me to believe Mac has a handle on what Ron wants to do as a D. Even if Rivera starts calling plays I see a DC on his staff.

McDermott is more than just a "Figurehead". Rivera has stated he does not have the time or resources to

I think that is closer to the truth than popular belief would like. Rivera wants to use the LB, and last year was rather lacking in that category. He sees a healthy corp, with an exciting addition, and made the command decision to become more involved with the D. Throw in the possibility that his D-line may out perform expectations. And you can see why he may want to get his stamp on this team.

Meh he had the talent in Philly and that's the real truth. He has lots of good ideas just sometimes picks the wrong time to use them. Working under Rivera is prob the best thing that could have happened to him. Rivera knows how to call a game and use his personal the right way. I will say this though, if Kuechly is what he seems to be then we will be a major headache to any team. Not cause of the blitz but because of his coverage.

    • USA vs Germany today 3:10pm. Mens schedule:
    • It is like when you go to da buffet at da Golden Corral and dey have all dis food and you get the same thing every time.   There is probably something you would like more, but you go to da same ol racks and get da same ol food every time.  Not sure why I am writing in trailer park dialect, but hey, watcha gonna dooo.
    • If we don't go OT, we will regret it.  What bothers me?  Are we going to get a starting-caliber OT at 19?  I think the draft is solid at OT, and the more I read up and watch video, the more I watch Lomu, the more I want him.   I see Freeling as a RT who needs some work in run blocking (since we need to run first, maybe not a good fit) and I see Proctor ending up as a Guard.  After Lomu (assuming Mouigia and fanu are gone), I think we wait until round 2.  In round 2, there are about 3-4 I like (Zuhn--good pass blocker and VERY underrated right now; Tiernan is a very good pass blocker as is Miller from Clemson, but both are not good in the run game.  Max Ixxxxx from Ariz St is impressive too---technically, there is not a of difference in these second tier guys--good in pass pro, need work in the run game.   If we wait until round 2 for an OT, we probably need to sign Nijman and start him early.   I almost think this is what we should do if Lomu is gone.  There is a big dropoff after him, imo, and I think we'd get better value if a stud ILB or edge is there.  Someone like TJ Parker Clemson makes sense. If Lomu is gone, trading back might be the play.
