Will Tolbert negate the need for another TE?

We've still got Gary and that dude from Ok St.

I think you will see a lot of different things with this offense. They will be very unpredictable, just like they were the last few games of the year. With everyone more familiar with the coaching I think it will allow Chud to open it up a whole lot more.

What excites me is the thought of the defense/special teams consistently getting good field position for the offense. We had the most drives of 80 yds plus in the NFL this past season. Give this O a shorter field and we will be scoring 30-40 points a game.

Bryant was listed as WR/TE, that might help him make the team? I'm being overly optimistic about this.

Joe Jon Finley/Nelson Rosario is competing with Ben Hartstock, although Hartstock is a better blocker Bryant is probably a better catcher.

My thoughts were originally why would we bring in someone that would take snaps away from Dwill and Stew which indeed it may but not to the extent I thought. When Shockey was not re-signed .My thought now are we will primarily use Tolbert in Leu of a 2nd TE and use a 2 back set.

I was not suggesting we will only carry one on the roster.

I prefer a good 6'5" TE over a little fullback. If Cam has one weakness it's accuracy. We need guy with a nice big catch radius.

he was excellent on throws to tight ends running up the seam, which will be a bread-and-butter route for our tight ends this year. i care more about a guy's ability to separate. accuracy on those routes shouldn't be a problem.

I don't think it's accuracy in general. Before we drafted him his lower body mechanics were a nightmare. Some of that came back during the season in spurts. But I don't think that's an issue. He has spurts of ridiculous accuracy when he's throwing with proper form and even on the run. And most of the season he was accurate.

The difference between being great and elite is a matter of inches. He completed a ton of balls last year but receivers would break stride or jump to make the play. It would never show up in the stat column but it's there. I'm sure he will improve every year.

No, but Tolbert will provide a different look for us, that will allow us to run various plays out of the same set. We will still use a two TE set mainly because Chud offensive playcalling is very TE friendly and it needs more than one TE, in addition; the playcalling calls for the TE to match up against LB on passing routes. Tolbert has the speed but not the height. I believe that Tolbert will mainly be used as a pass catching/running FB.

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
