NFC South Training Camp Battles

Recommended Posts

I think that Anderson versus Davis won't be a battle. Anderson will start and Davis will rotate in. If Davis holds up there could be an issue the second half of the season but not training camp where Davis will not get that much work. And as far as the whole discussion about using more linebackers and safeties in a nickel or dime package is ridiculous at best. Our 30th ranked safeties are better than our corners????? Seriously?????

Last year we ran a 4-3-4 and a 4-2-5 almost exclusively. I could see us going to a 3-2-6 against a team running 4 or 5 wides and little to no running game but we won't run it against New Orleans for example. If we do go to 6 defensive backs it will likely be 3 or 4 corners and 3 or 2 safeties depending on whether we are using man or zone coverage. But there is no way we will not use our corners in favor of safeties who were our weakest links last year. Loading the secondary with linebackers and safeties would surely be a novel look and it could work for a play or two. That is how long it would take for their offensive coordinator to stop laughing long enough to relay in a play.

There will be plenty of training camp battles like Defensive undertackle, offensive right guard and tackle, 5th and 6th receivers, starting free safety, second cornerback, etc. With so many players getting starting experience last year due to injuries, there should be lots of hard hitting and battling right up through final cuts and training camp.

I see that. Although we didn't add any top shelf talent, the overall talent level is still higher than it was last year at this time. There are at least a half dozen battles where starter time is on the line. That can only make you stronger.

As to the LBs. I think Rivera wants them to be interchangeable. Giving him options he didn't have last year. Mixing and matching line-ups can only add to the confusion he is trying to create.

    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
