Whats the deal with Cam charging for Autographs today?

Personally, I don't get it. Lets say they make 50 grand from autographs today. The promotions company is getting at least 40 percent of that. So Cam gets say 30 grand.

30 grand.

In the grand scheme, the hit it has taken in the court of public opinion is not worth what he gets paid for a tenth of a game of football play.

Will he take a hit? Seems like the national media will defend him. Fowler is just a "humble" local journalist who would have course scoff at this sort of thing. Its not like he's a bright guy, dont ya think someone would have snatched him up by now if he was any good? His opinions suck, quite frankly, because theyre not well thought out.

And please save me the oh $30,000 isnt enough for blah blah. 30,000 is a lot of money and just because Cam has a nice contract now the value of the dollar hasnt decreased. 30 G's is still 30 G's to a once poor preacher's boy. He could do things with that money to help a lot of people. Or fug it, he could just keep it. . . you know, since he's the greatest rookie of all time (imo).

EDIT: I dont think there is such a thing as a "grand scheme" btw in the way you refer to it with regards to how much money you have, that is something that WE rationalize as lesser wealthy people. Money is worth the same no matter what. People often question weathy people for things like this. They didnt get to be billionaires in one giant deal BAM. . BILLIONAIRE WOOO

I have a free autograph from both Cam and Smitty, the only thing it cost me was a couple trips to the practice field to catch them at the right time. After just about every practice I've attended, Cam will sign a few autographs, mostly for kids.

There are a few professional autograph hounds out there that have a box of stuff with them and clearly couldn't give a sh*t about the Panthers... both Cam and Smitty make a point of avoiding those guys and I don't blame them one bit.

Smith in particular gets very animated about it, I've seen him walk down the line past all these "usual suspects" and say "NO, NO, NO, NO, NO" as he passed each one of them. I was out there another time when he lectured some girl about why he wasn't signing for her after he politely said no and she asked him "why not?" (with a WTF? tone in her voice). He told her that he knew she was with the guys up on the hill and they had already asked him to sign stuff 3x that week, so he wasn't going to help them support their ebay business. She turned around and walked away and he said "Watch, she's going right up the hill to those guys" and sure enough, she did.

I've only ever asked Steve to sign one thing, and he signed it without hesitation and even personalized it with: "To Dave, all the best! Steve Smith # 89". I realize that personalizing it was also a way of making it hard to sell on ebay, but that's fine with me because I have no intent to sell it or any other autographed items I've collected. The point of my story is that if you don't abuse the privilege of asking Smitty to sign something for you, he will happily sign.

I've also only ever asked Cam to sign one thing and I came bearing gifts when I did. I printed out a poster size copy of that "SuperCam" pic and brought it to practice with me. As he was approaching me I told him he could have it if he would sign my jersey and he did, without hesitation.

The difference between my experience and this paid opportunity is that I was not guaranteed to get either of these autographs where I would be if I had paid and I have no problem with that... it's up to me to decide if I want to pay for a guaranteed autograph from Cam, it's not as if I can't get one for free as long as I'm willing to wait and not be a d*ck about it. Cam does plenty for charity, including donating autographed items, so I don't even want to hear about that.

These guys are not obligated to sign for anybody, they do it because they want to, not because they have to. The problem is the autograph junkies that show up at the practice field every day with a box of stuff and then get pissed off when a guy won't sign... they ruin it for everyone.

ugh. how was it a bad move?

nothing bad about it. nothing greedy about it. dude was offered a chance to get paid to sign some stuff that people will likely be getting paid for later on.

so?

it's not like he makes himself invisible to the fans or anything. it's not like he turns down offers to sign things for kids and the average fan.

i swear people are petty.

Ive never really nderstood the fascination for autographs myself. I would much prefer to just shake his hand and have his attention for 15 seconds. Long enough to say "Thank you, Im so grateful for everything you have done"

15 seconds is a long hand shake huh?. . .yeah he might look at me wierd after not letting go of his hand, but still

It's kind of a no win situation. If you don't sign any at all, you're perceived as a prima donna ahole. If you sign a ton of 'em, even for free, they'll still have value if you're a superstar player. Signing the kind of stuff he'll get in a 'sit down couple of hours' like this will at least get his sig out there on these typical items and help to 'out' the fakes that always appear. Apparently he's already seeing fake signatures. OTOH it's always gonna spark some outrage when a guy who's set for life with his first pro contract charges for sigs. If I were Cam I'd probably donate my share of the proceeds to charity.

all of the higher profile players do this.

Hines Ward just did this two weeks ago in Charlotte, and he's RETIRED. And it's not as if Cam is charging fans in Charlotte or in NC it's an event in Atlanta.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
