Rivera expects Bell to start at right tackle (Also other Tidbits)

Recommended Posts

It's obvious that Rivera likes him and hopefully that means he sees the capacity for improvement in him. There is no way to get around the fact that he was one of the worst tackles in the league last year. People get so caught up in good stories and emotions and excuses. He flat out needs to play better.

He was a fourth round pick, going into his third year; I wouldn't call him a bust.

And you just said it yourself, he hasn't proven anything more than Bell.

The way I read that statement, is Bell also hasn't proven anything more than Campbell.

We will see what happens in training camp and in the preseason.

I would agree that Campbell shouldn't be labeled a bust anymore than Bell should be. Campbell only played in 10 games his rookie year starting none of them and only played 4 games in 2011 meaning he has played in fewer games than Bell. Coming out of college he was highly touted and frankly having worked with learning disabilities for years, I doubt that it will negatively impact him that severely. Many learning disabilities affect the left side of the brain more than the right side meaning he may struggle to read and organize but is a visual hands on learner. Seems to me football is highly visual and hands on which should play into his strengths. I hope he can push Bell and perhaps even become the starter given we always have some injuries on the offensive line every year. We need depth all along the line.

As for Bell he has started a whole season so yes he is more proven than Campbell who has started 0 games in the league. So while I will agree with you on Campbell I don't agree on Bell.

I was watching Nfl network and these guys were saying we got rid of Otah so that we can put Silatolu at RT??

Does this make sense?

That's because NFL Network hires people based on looks or having a broadcast communications degree. It doesn't have anything to do with knowing football or knowing what's going on with teams in the NFL.

Silatolu was a RT in college but we drafted him to play at LG.

Silatolu was a LT in college. They often play RT when first arriving in the NFL if a team doesnt think they are ready for LT...

But all accounts were he was drafted to play LG but I guess he could be an interesting guy to watch. He would have some flexibility

Bwood, when you said that, I had to think of this...

We'll put that guy under the "broadcast communications graduate" section.

I am more concerned with Hangman starting than I am with Bell. Bell showed improvement, there is a very good chance that he is still improving. So I am not really concerned with Bell. With Hangman, that is a different story. Hangman needs to be a back-up not a starter. I really am hoping someone beats him out.

Rivera will put the best players on the field. That is a given. It is also the reason I have more confidence going forward.

My giddy is at an all-time high. And GOOOOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was not trying to downplay his ability as he has played well in the past. But, for me, I would rather he be depth. He can play both G, and C, that is huge. I guess he can slide over to C and we can plug in the G. I would just prefer he be depth not a starter. We have a ton of guys vieing for starter minutes, i just want one of them to beat out Hangman. Makes us better as a team, and makes me happy. Win win.

But hey, having been married for over 20 years I am used to not getting my own way.

    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
