Jerry Richardson Talks Cam

What’s he like?

“As a player or person?” asks Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson.

As a person.

“He wants to please,” Richardson says Monday. “He wants to please his parents, his teammates, his coaches. That’s been the characteristic that’s so refreshing.”

Before the Panthers committed to investing the first pick in the 2011 draft on Newton, Richardson invited Newton to his Charlotte home. After the meeting, Newton sent Richardson a handwritten note. Richardson has neither an email nor a Twitter account. He’s not on Facebook, either. But Newton probably didn’t know this.

Newton wrote a long note, one man to another, without the assistance of a laptop.

“They were his words,” says Richardson, who was and is moved. “It wasn’t written by somebody in public relations.”

What’s the relationship between the owner, who turned 76 this month, and the 23-year-old quarterback?

“I’m very straightforward with him, as I am with all my players,” says Richardson. “I’ll tell him what I think. If he disagrees, he’ll tell me. But with respect. He’s always respectful with me, as I am with him.”

It’s tough to write a column about Newton that doesn’t come off as an advertisement. But nobody in the organization says anything critical about him – not players, not coaches, not management.

He’s their quarterback, and they’re his organization.

A bit ominous and eerie to think about. Hopefully he'll witness a Super Bowl win before he's gone.

I hope so as well. I know it might be a bit of a pipe dream realistically, but if Kalil's promise were to come true this season, I don't think there'd be a better feel good team story out there - With the excitement surrounding the team like it never has before, the bounceback from last season, and the return of some of our best players from severe injuries, as well JR's acknowledgment of Cam most likely being the last QB he'll ever draft - it would all make that trophy mean so much more to players and fans alike. I just think that everything, the history as well as the future of the franchise are both sort of coming together and intertwining, and personally, I as a Panthers fan really feel like it's our time - or at least damn close.

Sorry if that didn't make too much sense.

Nice passive aggressive dig on the laptop, Sorensen, you hack.

Nice writeup otherwise! I noticed a lot of players going up to JR before practice yesterday. Could just be taking the opportunity to kiss the bosses ass but it seems like he's the kind of owner that players want to play for.

    • As the demand for apartments grows parking is becoming limited and it’s sad. I use to tailgate but I just park at uncc deck now and train in and head to rhino market. My tailgate grill hates me.
    • It simply depends on perspective. CMC, when healthy and on the field, has a higher YPC and YPR than LT. Yes, he's been injury prone, but this is simply a "all quarter-century team." There are certainly different stats and different lists. If this were a list or about a team simply based on longevity, then of course LT wins that every time, but some lists are more subjective and nuanced depending upon what they are, and it's not necessarily a reflection upon a person's ability to analyze sports.
    • From my what I have seen the overwhelming majority of people who are considering the notion a possibility don't really want to see it happen but are considering so for a number of reasons. Most importantly availability. Secondly even when he plays the last few seasons he has been red hot or ice cold. Then there is the subject of his defense which to say the least leaves a lot to be desired. Then there is the image of Ball inactive laughing it up on the sideline (while our team was getting the doors blown off) with previous busts who are now relegated to hanging on by a thread in the g league. I think we should be able to recognize with the team going out of their way to put a very strong emphasis on culture and leadership with the conclusion of this years draft that they expect LaMelo to lead the way this upcoming season and that begins with making significant strides and trending in a positive direction in the aforementioned aspects above. It just has to happen.
