Cam Newton to play whole half against Dolphins

First preseason game the starters usually play around one quarter. Second game they play about a half. Third game they play about three quarters. Fourth game they play one series, if at all. It's the same every year, for pretty much every team. I'm amazed how people forget this EVERY year.

Here's what the 1st team defense did against a powerful Texans' offense...

  • allowed 1 drive on maybe 3 big plays, but ultimately got a key stop on the goal line
  • created a quick turnover on a forced fumble by Keek, recovered by Martin
  • got another quick turnover with a pick by Phillips

I don't understand those that think our 1st team D played poorly.

Well poo when you put it like that....good perspective

I don't get it either. I thought our first team D looked awesome. Our kick coverage team and reserves looked like crap for the most part. Our first team defense and offense should be pretty good.

There I was worried about the lack of a pass rush and Cap getting torched. Now that I know they were so awesome I will sit back and relax.

On the 1st drive, Captain was in a soft zone (no jam at the line, everyone hanging back) and we gave up a big pass play. No surprise; we saw this over and over last year. He did redeem himself with a nice blitz on Schaub that forced the int by Phillips.

We didn't get to see enough of the 1st team D to know whether they are going to be good or bad. But the knee-jerk reaction by some that they played poorly just doesn't reflect reality.

If we want to talk about where we failed, it was kick coverages, 2nd/3rd team D, and of course the offense in the 2nd half. I believe we had one first down in the 2nd half just before Anderson left the game. Clausen was absolutely atrocious. There is no way to explain away his performance other than to say he just sucked.

But the big difference in TOP and yards gained (2 to 1) came mostly in the 2nd half.

I'm going to go ahead and predict that he and the offense are going to be working on specific things and not really focusing on the outcome, causing lackluster numbers and a huddle meltdown that calls for Cam being cut and Rivera and Chud fired.

I love you

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
