WR Depth Chart?

Recommended Posts

There has been a lot of discussion lately about our wide receiver depth chart. The debate is strongest at the #3 spot. Should it be Murphy? Pilares as a slot guy? Gettis when he is healthy? Maybe Ajirotutu rebounds to win it? Well, based on Ron Rivera's latest comments, it might not matter.

When asked who is standing out in the #3 battle, Ron emphasized that each of the candidates bring certain skills to the position, and they are likely to be used in different packages. Most of us tend to think in a classic linear fashion, where there is a definite pecking order, and that is what we saw last year, with Smith, Naanee and LaFell being used almost exclusively in all 3 receiver sets. It sounds like Chud and Ron have other ideas for this season, and will be a bit more creative about using all our potential weapons.

So perhaps we should forget the question of who our #3 is. Maybe Murphy, Pilares, Ajirotutu and hopefully Gettis (when healthy) all see significant playing time, utilizing each one's strength in various packages. And of course, Joe Adams is always a possibility depending on how quickly he develops.

The only limiting factor in this plan is how we want to allocate our game day active roster. That may vary widely depending on the opponent and the overall health and depth at other key positions. It seems clear, though, that we will probably utilize more than just 3 guys as we start the season.

One final point...there is still considerable controversy over which receivers will make the final roster. By calling out the specific receivers above, I am not making a case for any of them making the team or not making the team. This is about scheme, nothing more.

I like the idea of having Murphy, Gettis (when healthy), and Pilares seeing time as the 3rd WR situationally. I personally don't think Ajirotutu makes the roster unless we put Gettis on the IR (I hope not). Receivers would be Smith, Lafell, Murphy, Gettis, Pilares, and Adams. Don't think we can justify keeping more than 6.

In terms of talent I think it goes

1.Smith

2.Lafell

3.Murphy/Gettis....havent seen enough to distinguish which is better when healthy

Let me stop right there because these 4 should see the most snaps because of talent alone.

Then as far was the rest I think it will be in situational packages that we unleash the rest.

Also as you mentioned with only being able to dress 46 each week, no way we dress more than 5, maybe 6 receivers. That then leaves the 5th one being Adams for PR and 6 would go to Pilares if he retains the KO duty job imo.(All of this of course subject to who's healthy enough to play).

Where did the 46 come from? I thought it was 53 dressed for gamedays?

nope 53, is your active roster. They can only are allowed to dress 46 of them on gamedays.

Also fyi, practice squad are 8 and do not count against your active 53, but can't dress unless activated.

Don't you remember seeing Jimmy standing on the sideline in shorts last year? He wasn't injured, just not part of the active game day 46...just went back and looked and he wasn't activated 1 game.

No they have to keep some inactive (dumb rule, but it is not new).

I think it will be: Smitty, LaFell, Murphy, Gettis, Pilares, Adams.

Can't underestimate how valuable the multi-dimensional aspects of Pilares & Adams are to them be desginated as part of the WR rotation.

Strange to me they have not worked Admas much there yet. Time will tell, but I really think they are 'shielding' Green from much pre-season action so they can stash him on the practice squad.

I agree that naming a #3 seems to have been deemed a moot point moving into opening day. Looks like it's simply coming down to who makes the roster at WR and what each will be utilized for. I think Joe Adams will be the week 1 PR and Pilares will be the KR. Gettis will be on the roster if healthy and will slowly work into some snaps if he can stay healthy. While LaFell seems to be the #2 choice for now, he might need to continue to improve to stay there. I think the ones behind him are hungry for chances, and Murphy hasn't had the acclimation time yet to show his potential.

I think you are right about LaFell being pushed. While Brandon has a knack for big catches in big moments, last year there were long stretches of games when he would disappear. Murphy looks like a nice fit in this offense, and Pilares should be a really good YAC receiver.

Gettis will remain a mystery until he gets some actual on-the-field action.

    • Also if it reads funny, I tried to type it as accurately as I could without changing anything, I wasn’t trying to be sloppy.
    • Hey, tbe  first pro game for Bryce vs the first for Cam, nothing needs to be said.    EdIt/PS each showed us exactly who they were, first time.
    • I went back and watched the press conference from Monday again because I wasn’t really paying attention at the time. He’s telling us what’s going on, but we are just dismissing it as coach speak. Here it is in text.   Reporter 1: When you say with confidence, do you think Bryce is confident taking those deep shots, or are they being called? What is going on with that? Canales: Yeah it’s a mix of all those things. Reporter 2: What needs to happen for your deep passing game to open up a little bit? Canales: Chemistry, timing, it’s everybody. Protection-wise, was.. um, finding the right opportunities, coverage-wise, um.. and then it’s just you know, the timing and me to you factor- getting the guys down there and giving them opportunities to make the plays. Reporter 3: Is it fair to criticize the lack of vertical threat you guys had, like Xavier Legette had a post wide open but the ball got hit up, there are opportunity there but drops, play mishaps, etc. Are you pushing the ball downfield with your play calling or do you feel like there is a disconnect with the production? Canales: In general it’s a group effort, yes lets get some more opportunities, um, to have those plays come alive- I will call them more when we have more success with them and those things come alive for us, but we have to keep working together, we have to keeping taking those shots in practice to make sure we are comfortable with them and uh; certainly for Brad and I to look at the pass game, coverage, and what they are giving us, uh pretty simple. When they are playing single high and everyone is at the line of scrimmage, we have to make the most out of those opportunities when we have them. Um, so that we uh, are a balanced offense which um, does play off of the run game, which we have got going but now let’s get the pass game going so we can really attack with an offense that I visualize for us. Reporter 4: Calling and Bryce taking more shots back last season… why have you gotten away from it if it’s as simple as what you’ve said about kinda getting too reliant on the success of the run game? Canales: By numbers-wise we are about the same, I think it’s just a matter of chemistry, the full group getting comfortable with those things and then making it come alive. Reporter 5: Is Bryce comfortable taking those deep shots? Canales: We will have to just keep growing as a group and make sure that you, we are at the time on task, the trust factor, the me to you factor, the.. all these things you know, and grow. Reporter 6: What do you think will help the trust factor? When you say that do you mean between receivers and Bryce? Staff and Bryce? Or play calling and Bryce? Canales: all those things and you know, it happens in practice and uh, we’ve had these things come alive in practice and we got to make sure they make it to the game. Reporter 7: If you’re not seeing success in the vertical game, is there a way to alternate your approach to open up more YAC opportunities? Canales: That could be a strategy as well, throwing and catching on some of the short/intermediate stuff um, but I do know you want to stretch the field at times and we get these vertical shots called and we try to make sure we are attacking the right coverages and then from there it’s confidence and the me to you factor which happens in practice. So what I got out of that was he is calling it but Bryce isn’t throwing it. It sounds like Bryce is checking out of it for better coverage match ups and / or thinking he doesn’t have good chemistry with some of the receivers. Also how he totally skips Reporter 5’s question is damning as hell.
