Steve Smith Injury Update

TB without Steve is just as bad as NO

We put up 10 in a half against NYJ, and their defense is well ahead of TB. Yes, it's still shitty, but 20 points could win a game at TB, whereas we'll need 35 to win against New Orleans. 35 without Smitty isn't going to happen IMO.

only stuff to know...

Coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday receiver Steve Smith remains unable to put weight on the foot. The good news, per Rivera, is that the infection has “gotten much better.”

The lingering nature of the condition has created speculation that Smith may have had a staph infection. During the weekly Wednesday morning PFT visit with The Mac Attack on WFNZ in Charlotte, co-host Chris McClain said that he received an email from a Panthers source indicating that Smith did not have a staph infection.

It doesn’t change the fact that Smith remains on crutches, but the five-letter “s” word has acquired a stigma in football circles, fueled by the outbreak of staph infections several years ago in Cleveland.

fwiw...if you click on the link you get this tweet which PFT kind of jumped to a conclusion much like people did with the whole staph infection thing...

@Panthers

Rivera says Steve Smith (foot infection) has gotten much better. Still on crutches but happy and feeling great.

still on crutches doesn't necessarily mean can't put weight on it.

Remember we had a hard time to even get near scoring position until Capt made that int. w/o Capt's int, I dnt know if we would've score at all as a first unit.

Believe it or not, those Bucs aren't the same as last year. Both offense and defense should be better than last yr. I dont think scoring 20pts can win us a game this time. TB should be a offensive powerhouse if Freeman can step up his game with weapons of Vjax, Mike Williams, Benn, and even Dallas Clark (3rd down). Im not sure we can even put up 20 points if we're w/o Smitty. TB secondary is above average with Talib, Wright, Barron and Barber. I can tell you that w/o Smitty, only way we're going to win is pound that running game all day. We aint going to win through the air w/o 89.

And I hate it when people talk about oh they have a new coaching staff. We had a new staffs last year and see what happens? A new coaching staffs will only motivate guys that been losing to want to win more this time around. A new voice is always good to hear once in a while.

Rivera said he was walking without it some and was joking around, nothing to stress about...

Smith continues to nurse a foot infection that has kept him off the practice field for more than a week. He is still on crutches, though he has walked without them at times.

“He’s gotten much better. He was in today. He was walking around on it, which was a very good sign. He was joking around,” said coach Ron Rivera.

I'm just saying TB is not an automatic win like they were last season. They are much improved...but they have been hit hard with injuries. Losing Joseph and Blount.

They've added some pieces. I still think Freeman is overrated.

Again...without Smith, will be a lot tougher to beat TB and we have to have him when the shoot out with NO begins

Blount crippled there offense last year. The rookie starting makes that offense immediately better

    • Give me Anthony Hill Jr or give me death
    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
