Read Option

The Bucs did a good job of stopping it because they sold out to stop the run, and if we didn't have protection issues, we would've killed them in the air like the Giants did.

One things for sure though, you can't stop it with just your DE's.

It looked to me that the Bucs focused on the RB and Cam didnt ever try to run. Not the case vs Saints, Cam has to keep a defense honest to make it successful.

I don't care for it. We are just tempting disaster. There are some dirty defenders out there who would love nothing more than to get a cheap shot on a star QB and do them serious harm.

That can occur when he is a passer....to date, I am still more worried about him getting hurt while passing than running

How is it not? If executed properly, there isn't a more effective PLAY in football, let alone running scheme. That isn't an opinion, it's an observable fact. There is a reason why GT has one of the more potent, if not the most potent, running game in college football. You can say "they run more often" all you want. They still have the yards per carry numbers up above 4 a carry with every ball-carrier. That's effective as hell.

Wouldn't say that necessarily. You don't key in on RBs in that scheme. If the end man on the line of scrimmage commits to the RB, Cam carries. If he doesn't, Cam hands off. I don't follow your train of thought there.

We had 10 yards our first game. You would sit here and tell me that we wouldnt have had more yards running from pro formations?

You answered your question within the first three words of your reply. It is hard to execute it properly, the QB has to make a decision in about 1 second, based upon his instant look from the snap. Don't get me wrong, it is definitely a monkey wrench to defenses but there are just as many no gains(or losses) as a traditional NFL running game. Our run game in 08 and 09 had similar overall numbers as our run game last year, so there is proof as well. Not saying it is unproductive, just saying if you want to be a successful rushing team, you don't have to run read options.

It's here to stay.

I've rewatched the game a couple times and there are a couple plays we ran that I have no idea how anyone could ever stop. Cam does such a good job hiding the ball and there are at least two (possibly three and four options) on every play.

It is deadly, however it all hinges on the o-line.

If the o-line does thier job, the offense is nearly unstoppable.

Short term(3 years) it's here to stay. As Cam progresses and learns to read defenses he will do less of it and he should. The hits he takes running it will take years off of his career otherwise. That is assuming he is more than Mike Vick as a pocket passer.

Later in his career I see it being something smart coaches will turn to as a change of pace in the playoffs when games matter the most.

The OL wasn't blocking ANY TYPE OF RUN. None at all. Under center, shotgun, nothing worked because the OL was allowing guys through gaps at the snap. That had nothing to do with execution of the play or the read. It had to do with execution of the OL in both pass and run blocking all game long.

Theoretically, if a play is executed by all parties, it should be successful. Doesnt matter the type of play.

Agreed. So what is your point? Week 1, neither the read option nor traditional run plays were working, so why single out the read option as the weaker of the two? That seems to be what you're doing.

I wasn't trying to single it out, I love watching our team run it. We have been going back and forth on a dialogue in which you responded to me in which I suggested that the read option isn't necessarily going to guarantee better success than that of more traditional pro running. You pinned it on execution, then I pointed out the obvious, that if execution is there then we have a successful play, regardless of the play concept.

  • 3 weeks later...

Cam looked good running it against the Saints*. A few good reads @atl. He's struggled with it for the most part tho. Part of it on the oline. More of it on Cams indecisive reads.

teams with explosive front sevens will dominate the option, as we have seen from the 3 good front sevens we have faced.
