Next GM will be busy, and the changes may not be pleasant

The first thing the next GM will have to do will be to decide just how much of the coaching staff he wants to keep... He will surely want his own choice as coach, so it's quite likely that Ron Rivera does not survive the transition, barring a massive turn around in the Panthers on field produce, and season...

Next, front office changes could happen, and happen quickly... The only administrative position that is safe is Jackie Miles... Don Gregory needs to update his resume, quickly...

After these decisions have been made, the new GM will need to get a handle on the roster... The next GM will have come into the organization knowing the cap situation, and will certainly have a game plan on how to address it... This could spell the end for some high priced, under performers... On the surface this will make fans happy, but it could also potentially cripple the cap for a season or two, while the new GM gets the people he wants... I'd wager that the only 2 names on the roster that are safe are named Newton and Smith... Everyone else is expendable under a new regime...

Finally, the next GM will have to decide how to best build the team... Through free agency? The draft? Both? It's likely that the team will maintain it's overall philosophy of building through the draft, but a higher presence in the free agent market than most are used to is reasonable to expect...

Now we just have to wait to see who it'll be... Established former GM? Up and coming hotshot front office guy from another team? Former successful coach wanting to step up? Or someone entirely out of left field? Whoever it is, the moves will take a good deal of the focus off of Cam Newton and give him some much needed breating room for the near future...

I am not sure this is a bad thing.

Are you saying that Danny Morrison will possibly be let go?

an aging steve smith safe?

no.

Smith will either play out his remaining contract, or retire... It would be extremely difficult for the next GM to release him, given his relationship with Mr Richardson, and his iconic status with the team/fans/community, and given his $18M guaranteed through 2015 and the lack of talent at the position beyond him...

Rebuild 2.0 is definitely coming. This may or many not work based on our choices, but it will re-energize the fanbase.

The verdict is out but I am not so sure that a strong GM will be put in place. Other than some draft moves Hurney was a yes man. Maybe he is giving Rivera a pass based on what Hurney has drafted.

Jr is not predictable but my guess he thought Hurney would be the best fall guy......he was not in a contract.
