Cam Newton criticized while Matthew Stafford ignored

I've been saying, he has shown signs of progression and improvement... It's the lack of consistency - not so much him, but of our offense, to stay on the field for extended drives... That's what is making us look and play a lot worse than what we are. All goes back to coaching.

Cam hasn't been perfect and he's had a few mistakes, but I'm tired of seeing people trash the guy who has been the sole reason we've even been competitive in the games we've played (minus the Giants).

I believe that he has shown improvement too. When we run a pro-style offense like last year, I think the consistency will come back. What kills me dude, is how people say he needs to learn to lose. I just don't get it.

It's true that Stafford is facing a more unprecedented slump statistically( 5000+ yards, 41 TDs in 2011) but I think the reason he isn't being destroyed as badly as Newton is demeanor. Regardless of how you feel about Newtons and Staffords play and 2012 records, one is looking really, really bad about how they are handling it. People know how bad Stafford has been playing but Stafford doesn't give the media the template for hate Cam has. If Cam and Stafford want to be compared simply on play than Cam can't keep acting the way he does after a loss.

cam is just more interesting and has a higher ceiling...and he talks more. he's a higher profile guy. stafford is vanilla. just a boring person. he's just being ignored and forgoten because no one really cares about him except lions fans.

Yea I find this to be true... Cam is actually interesting by media standards. I remember back in our Jake Days how we can have really good wins or even bad losses and it might get 2 secinds of attention in the media... we were boring so they did not care.

Cam is probably more like Tony Romo to the media. Romo is interesting and even if he has a good season or a good 3 game stretch if he has a down/bad game it's all over every media outlet.

Like Ponder and the vikings being 5-2 with Ponder yet I don't think I've heard one word about him or them in the media... why? Boring. So I don't think it's black and white... It's more of who/ what teams are boring/interesting toi the media.

There may be something to Stafford not being as big of a topic because he's so vanilla, but that argument can be negated when you look at the amount of idiots trying to cloak questions about Cam's play on-field (not so)cleverly within their criticism of his off-field behavior/demeanor. A lot of these pundits are using questions about Cam in pressers and his maturity to overlap and blur the lines between persona and performance.

Yes, sometimes I get concerned about how hard he takes losses, but it doesn't justify the criticism he gets in general. And I don't think the way he deals with losses is unjustified - but again, he gets lambasted for his reactions without media taking into account how bad the organization has been as a whole for the last 4 years. While Stafford may lack personality or at least enough of one that he's a constant talking point, he still is having a horrible year in his 4th season and no one is destroying him on either front.

Romo is actually a really bland person though. I mean, the dude wears Starter hats in pressers and this is 2012, lol.

Can't give one guy all the credit then be upset when he gets all the blame.

Yea in general I feel the media focuses to much on the demeanor and off the field stuff with players in general. I believe off the field issues has very little to do with production on the field, that's why I could give 2 shits how Cam acts after the game. Now what is true sometimes is how a player is off the field, could also be how a player is on the field and in a negative way, Example: Dez Bryant... you can tell off the field he is a head case and on the field he does not put the proper dedication and work into his craft. I don't think Cam has any issues that seem in on the field so for me the off field stuff is irrelevant.

    • Derrick Brown was one player I never called or even suggested was a bust . Dude was young and hadn't even hit his stride. It takes time to learn the position. The thing I appreciated about him is that he kept improving season after season. He got paid and keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny.
    • How many teams coddle their QB the way Bryce has been coddled? I have never seen any other team in the NFL EVER baby a QB the way that Bryce has been.  Bryce was named day 1 starter his first year. It was obvious he didnt deserve it. He wasnt ready as evidenced by the worst rookie year in NFL history.  So let's move to year 2. He's named starter again with no competition in TC and is benched 2 games later. We have the ghost of a backup in Dalton who is so bad he can only beat Vegas and let's remember, the only reason he lost his starting job was a car accident, not because Bryce actually beat him out in practice.  And year 3. We sign Dalton again, who already proved he couldn't be depended on to put an even remotely passable performance on the field, and bring back Jack Plummer, who was even worse than last year. It was obvious he was nothing more than a pretend body in an attempt to create an illusion of some type of attempt to find a backup.  Then we start again with garbage play again and Bryce gets benched with a phantom injury, and the ghost of the ghost of Dalton breaks his thumb on the first drive and craps the field all over again. If we had actually made an attempt to find a legitimate QB2, it's possible Bryce doesn't step on the field again. Bryce is not agood QB and if we had any other mediocre QB, our record would be the same or better.  Bryce is not entrenched. He's been placed, protected and sheltered from ever having to face a  real QB competition in TC. Richardson and Levis both were ass and both were benched and eventually replaced.  Do I expect Baker to face competition in camp? Sure. I expect Tampa to find the best QB2 they can at price that fits their cap and resources and system and get him up to speed. If he's better than Baker, and if he's better by a significant margin, that's best for the team. The ultimate goal is a Super Bowl. Bellichek was constantly getting QB2s with the GOAT as his starter. He knew the value and that was realized when Cassell led them to an 11-5 record as a backup.  You and I may think differently than the people that matter but I will say it again. If you're afraid to bring in a capable backup, especially after the debacle of last year. The starting role wasn't earned, it was given, and that's loser mentality.
    • I would have done the same thing.  LSU is a much better job than Ole Miss.  Plus the enormous contract and every advantage a college team can offer in terms of recruiting and facilities and tradition etc
