Replay observerations

I am the first to admite that I have given the coaches an easier time tham they might deserve.

However, about the pick-6 after watching a replay:

1. Smith tripped on a similair pattern in the first half (the ball was not thrown to him so noone noticed)

2. Jennings had jumped the route on an eariler almost intercepting it.

So the coach should have know this was a higher risk play this day on this field and not call it in a keep that ball at all cost situation.

Running:

Our running game totally stalled in the 2nd half. Sure we broke an 8-17 yards run a couple of times but it was at least 3 runs for no gain for every one of those. And all this from power running formations.

Our last drive:

We got really lucky on this one with the penaly on Cam (low hit), it does not effect the play and should have been 3 and 9 if the defender doesn´t give it to us.

I agree with your observations, but regarding our run game, it is something we just have to stick with for a while until it gets going. We've erred way too much toward the passing game and it's time to have some patience with the run.

The only other thing I'd add is we still are in the shotgun formation way too much.

What I am saying is: The, main, problem is not the running style or defense. It is that we do not adjust when the other team changes what is not working for them.

Or that our players are not good enough once their weaknesses are found.

Or most likely a combination...

Rivera and McDermott don't seem to realize that Cover 4 works but it should be situational and shouldn't be called 5 plays in a row.

When a play call (specifically a pass play) is not successful people tend to only consider the option that was executed. So to say that that was a bad play call ignored the fact that there were multiple other receivers out on routes at the same time. There may be a primary receiver on a any given play but the success of the play is based on the proper execution of the entire formation. After the fact, it's too easy to judge the call by narrowing your focus to the options the players chose at the time.

Bottom line: if we don't let them march down the field at the end of the game with the same play over and over again, we win.

If they dont give us the penalty on 2 and 9 on our last drive they, most likely, don´t have to march down the field...

    • I watched a clip of all the offensive snaps. Young threw into some tight coverage and the guys made some plays on the ball. He also really missed some throws.  He has this middle of the field thing into a tight window pretty good and made three or four nice plays but he was just too inconsistent with his accuracy especially in the red zone. Today and in general.    That Int where people were chastising Legette for ‘not fighting through the coverage’, he in no way could have gotten to that ball. IMO. I think he thought it was going to hit the ground and didn’t see the defender coming for it. But not sure what he could have done. The camera doesn’t show the spatial relationship very well, I think the ball was way off. maybe 6 feet or more off target to the inside of the field.  Rico is a beast. And a very good receiver.   That was my impression without dissecting and rewinding, just letting the video roll. I did rewind the int two or three times to look at that one.
    • My biggest issue with keeping Darnold, which I felt we should have done, is we would still have Fitterer. And everything that came with that.  I think Morgan is going to be good.  Baker, just did not play well at all here. Not sure what else we were supposed to take away from it at the time.  That’s my short ‘I don’t want to argue about it’ take.
    • Even if we somehow make the playoffs we will be one and done so fast. Seattle, Rams, TB, Panthers, Detroit and Philly are all better than us.
