Shannahan's take on the read option

Paraphrasing....

Said it is a great thing to mix in

Said however if you do something TOO MUCH in the NFL it won't work. Doesn't even matter what it is. Opponents will get comfortable with how to defend it and it will put too much pressure on one man.

Basically, he said what Carolina did to open up this year.....was dumb and flawed. Put too much weight on Cam's shoulders and became easy to defend.

I mean, whether he meant to or not....what he said flat out calls out our coaches. More people should.....the media especially.

hasn't the media been calling out our coaches for several weeks now?

To my knowledge, the national media has spent their time talking about Cam and his slump. A quiet voice or two has correctly called the situation but their opinion is dwarfed in the other noise.

Local media is irrelevant IMO now that we have Newton.

i've been hearing and seeing a good few things from major media talking about how the system and coahcing has been bad and has been really blasting the read option.

and.....they've been atacking cam.

some. though, have been pointing out that the criticism of cam has been unwarranted and that the real problem is the game plan and coaching.

Shanny has done a great job mixing in the read with the west coast offense (along with a stellar running attack) placing a premium on quick slants and delivering the ball on 3 step drops. I believe Washington's ability to run the ball is the key factor in their success. When oposing teams are able to shut down Washington's running attack it takes away the play action and hinders RG3's ability to take advantage of confused defenders. I thought the Falcons and the Steelers did an excellent job stopping Washington's ground game therefore stopping Washington offense as a whole.

It was good to see Chud change up the offense last week to something more traditional, even if he did it with JR holding a gun to his head (as someone, probably Proudiddy, called it in the chat).

However, we were still in the shotgun too much. I only have the data for the first half, but for that period we were in the shotgun for 31 plays, or about 73% of snaps, compared to 11 from under center and 2 from the wildcat with DWill. And 4 of the 11 plays under center came in our first possession, so it looked like Chud was reverting more to his old ways as the game went on.

The good news is we didn't run the read option one time in the 1st half. There were some shotgun handoffs, but no read option.

It's going to be interesting to see if Chud has the discipline to stick with the run as the year goes along, hopefully along with 2 TE sets.

Skins fan here and thats not true even though alot of people do believe that. Atlanta & Cincy held us down some mainly due to Shanny going conservative at home for some reason. Thats why we had that 9 game home losing streak. He would turn RG3 loose on the road and go conservative at home. I hated it soo much.

Against Atlanta, they never stopped our run. We had like a million rushing yards but unlike our road games, we just kept running non stop. On the road we mix it up with the playaction pass and then we also would pass on 1st or 2nd down. In that & the Cincy game it was all run run run run, pass and even then the pass was a stupid short screen or something.

The same thing actually happened in our game against Minny. We ended up scoring like 38 points but I bet anything that we may have lost and wouldve only scored like 13 if it wasnt for Minny jumping out to a 9-0 lead. It forced Shanny to finally open it up at home and then we went off in the last 3 quarters.

Thats why I acutally think we will win the game against you guys. I think Shanny has learned his lesson and wont do that at home anymore. I think we will finally be tough to beat at home. As for the Pitt game, they never stopped our run. Alot of the media people said that but it wasnt true. We still were well over 4ypc. We just had a game plan to throw more and we also got behind early so we had to throw more.

It still wouldve worked but we dropped a NFL high 11 passes. Even the Steelers fans all admitted that it wouldve been a different game if we could catch. Now they held RG3's rushing but thats another misconception. Some games we dont look for RG3 to run much. You probably see the same thing with Cam.

He might have games with very lil rushing yards but its mostly because he wasnt trying to break long runs or it wasnt the game plan. Still, we need to get healthy. RG3 can easily beat teams with his arm but he has no Steve Smith or Reggie Wayne. Garcon was a beast for us but he wont be back for a couple of weeks at the earliest and now we are without Fred Davis. We have all show guys who cant catch
