Could Byron Bell be a franchise Left Tackle some day?

Captain could make a lot of teams as a nickel CB. Not really his fault we are so weak we play him as a #2 CB.

And Byron couldn't? Byron has been consistent and has gotten MUCH better than last year, I often see Gross get beat more times than him.

Luke Joeckel with our top 5 pick this year anyone?

I am a person who thinks any team should draft OL every year in the first 4 rounds. Having said that, I think Gross is not doing great, but not that badly. Does he qualify as a need? Maybe, if you look at the cost of cutting / trading him. I think RG is by far the biggest need and I beleive we will draft another guard in the second round this year.

I think we have to draft a T in the first round---a DT. This is a good draft for them.

I think we will have to draft a LT in 2014,

As almost everyone knows. You cannot have too much depth where it comes to your lines. So I am not adverse to drafting linemen in any draft. Offensive or Defensive.

We still have Gross. Kallil should be good as new. Bell has RT, and Amini has LG. Add a RG and we should be good to go. I just don't think it is that big of a need to use our 1st rounder on one. Anything after that is fine. Same with DT. We need one, just not for a first.

We need to spend that first on a S. One that has ball hawking and coverage skills, that can tackle. One that could change the culture of our Defensive Backfield.

Hell. Get the RG, DT, and S in FA. Spend the draft on BPA. And watch our stock climb.

Oh yea. And GOOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Not a Bell hater, but would rather have Bell at right guard. Left tackle? Can't see it happening.

I'd love to see Bell move inside and get someone else for the right tackle spot.

Sometimes I hate you. I have been an advocate of keeping Bell at RT. He has two years invested, and has shown marked improvement. But, getting a top level RT would make our line better than keeping Bell at RT and getting a top level G.

Nope. I would rather keep Bell at RT and get that G. Gotta be solid at the GCG spots. Keep that pocket away from Cam.

Well that was the quickest trurnaround I've ever been a part of. Thanks for making me think this early in the morning.

Bell is fine at RT. Sure there are better guys, but not for what Bell is being paid. I don't think he is quick enough to play LT. Put a quality RG beside him and he'll look like an All-Pro.

I concur 100%. Bell is just not athletic enough for any other position. He is fine where he is. Maybe not All-Pro. But if he keeps improving, he could prove me wrong.

I say, draft or buy a top level RG and we are set.

Read an interesting article today about this very switch.

It may surprise people but switching from one side to the other is a very tough ask for a player to make. According to current OLinemen in the NFL it's much easier to switch to guard than to move from LT to RT or vice versa. So any switch should be very carefully considered to avoid completely ruining one or two players progression.

For the record, gross is playing just fine in both the running and passing game. We don't really need to start grooming a player yet, he should still have several years in the league and when he does wind down just get a first round pick, as they have very high success rates over the last 5 or so years. Gross remains our best lineman in both the passing and running game and has been since he moved to LT.

If gross could go from RT to LT, why can't Bell?

If gross could go from RT to LT, why can't Bell?

Gross was one of the best linemen in the league and has a serious talent advantage over Bell. Gross had also played his college career at LT so had the additional experience over Bell. That said even Gross had growing pains as he adjusted the first time to LT.
