Controversial opinion: the read option should not be totally abandoned

When utilized effectively (like it was last year and over the last few games) the read option can actually be tremendously dangerous. It is not effective when the entire offense is based around it.

The most dangerous part about the read option is its unpredictability and the radically different way that a defense has to adjust compared to standard pro option. But when teams only have to prepare for that its weaknesses are exposed.

I made this comparison in another thread, but the triple option is like a changup in baseball. It can be very effective, especially with pitchers who have a very good changeup. But if you threw a changeup with every pitch it would just be a really slow fastball.

In conclusion, keep the read option but only run it 5-8 times a game (more if its killing the other team and they are totally unprepared for it)

I don't think this is such a controversial opinion. The only reason we scream "rip the fuging read option section out of the playbook" is our coaching staff are morons.

Used sparingly and intelligently it can be a three or four time a game middle finger to the opposing defense.

Used as the base set for the entire fuging offense it can be a not so subtle middle finger to our developing QB...and our RBs who are given the ball 5 yards deep while not fuging moving.

I just feel like our read option is so vanilla compared to the Redskins Read option. I also think Chud should've fully dived into running it out of the pistol formation like the Skins. Especially with our backs, and it provides great protect, when u run the fake out of it.

    • Damn back to 10th. I only caught the last 5 minutes but some of those 3's were horrible lol. In that close of game you can't be launching those many hail mary's when you could be chipping away from the foul line. I guess no one wanted to get in the paint and didn't trust the refs to give them the calls maybe? Gonna watch the highlights to get a better idea of the flow of the game
    • I agree.  The Big 12 is a good conference, and he is the swinging dick in that conference.  If Bill Self retires, that sets Kansas back a bit, and Arizona moves even further ahead as the best team in that conference.  Arizona can crush west coast recruiting with USC / UCLA no longer being relevant for LA kids, and Gonzaga not being able to compete moneywise.   If Lloyd comes here, he will be second fiddle to Duke every single year in NIL and recruits.  Not to mention the entire SEC and Big East for kids who want to stay in those regions to play. This is why I keep saying go get Mark Few.  Has proven he can do more with less from an X / O perspective but can also recruit All American players and compete at a high level. He's a god at Gonzaga, but for $9M he'd make the move as that's 4x what he's making at Gonzaga, and makes him the highest paid coach in the country.
    • Certainly not going to miss his constant whiffs on sacks and tackles.
