List of buttholes that hit pucker factor 10 during Gettleman's presser

I don't know why Gross keeps showing up on these lists. We all spent the year watching our QB get killed in the pocket and bemoaning our offensive line, and now everyone wants to cut our most consistent and important player just because he's slightly worse than the Pro Bowler he usually is.

He was not good this year, he got beat way too much. Plus not having Kalil and having Silatolu as a rookie meant all three position on the left side and middle were suspect. Add that hangman was playing center so we had to replace the right guard with a backup and he was never a great center and what would you expect. With Kalil back next year and Silatolu with a year of experience, and Hangman back at right guard, the line should be better with or without Gross.

Would you compromise and agree that he needs to be moved to the right side? With MAJOR restructuring?

I will be unlike most and actually listen to your response.

But who would we put on the left side? For me, it's not about whether Gross costs too much, it's that I'm terrified of Cam getting killed just because we need cap relief.

It's pretty easy to understand why it would be a topic of discussion:

1) Gross' cap hit this year is over $11 million.

2) The 14th pick last year carried a cap hit of under $2 million.

3) This is a good draft for OT's.

4) We are reportedly $16 million over the cap going into the year.

I'm not necessarily saying he should get cut, but it certainly is a situation worth discussion. And just for the record, he was a 1st team Pro Bowler 1 time in his 10 year career, and went one other time.

I know its been mentioned but I'm too lazy to search...is Gross' deal something we can restructure for cap space or is it a likely release? That's the big question I think that a lot are in the dark about and not necessarily about his play. The line shifting and having him like 55 said alongside Amini and Hang'man wasn't helping so it made him look expendable to many.

I think once Kalil is back...we have an almost solid situation: Gross-Amini-Kalil-_____-Bell until injuries and depth comes into play.

Hang'man is the weakest link by a long shot but I think gets a go by many teams due to his versatility and not necessarily his level of play. If we can restructure Gross, (& correct me if this is off) I think the best route would be to get a starting OG and further depth on the line who we can groom behind Gross for the future.

Don't forget he is one of the few locker room leaders for our offense. At least that was how it's been portrayed for a few seasons now through the local media. That's a big void if he's gone.

Sure, Gross could be restructured/extended. It is just not always a wise idea to do that with an older player.

But let's say Gettleman goes to work and finds that we look to be in good shape in 2015 for example, then maybe he is not as reluctant to do it. Without having a spreadsheet showing all the commitments and anticipated future costs, it is hard for us novices to get a real good handle on it.

    • I hope Bryce balls out. Wouldn't bet the farm on it though. Morgan has to be practical though. He was placed into a situation where he was compelled to give Bryce a long look. There really haven't been any more practical options due to who has been available at the position. The Panthers had already put their chips in with Bryce, so putting more chips in by borrowing against the future and stacking on that by borrowing against the future without really having the requisite draft capital was a nonstarter. We could either dump Bryce and go dumpster diving for known and unknown JAGs at the position, or take out chances and let it play out with Bryce and hope for acceptable returns. Due to what looks like some good moves in the draft and free agency, it appears like we're finally getting into a position where we can take a swing again if need be without destroying the core of the team. I understand that you'll believe it when you see it, but Dan is gonna move on if Bryce can't cut it. There are too many professionals lives and careers tied to Bryce to simply accept the status quo.
    • Football is the ultimate team sport. No sport is more dependent on others for your success - including coaching. I don't know if Bryce is the guy, but I do know this has been a very bad team all around since he got here. One of the worst o-lines and coaching staffs I've ever seen his rookie year. One of the worst defenses and receiving groups (including TEs) I've ever seen his 2nd season - with a rookie HC and OC. An improving WR group his 3rd season mostly due to a rookie. The only other WR of note didn't really play well until after the 10th game of the season due to injury. Still no receiving TE to speak of. And lost games because of the worst pass rush in the NFL. And the only speed he's ever had on the field was DJ Chark. A washed up DJ Chark that played here one year and has had 31 yards receiving since leaving.  Carolina had no business moving up for a QB in 2023. They weren't ready. Especially if it meant trading your only good WR to do it. Now finally there's potential on defense. Potential on o-line. Potential at WR, including some actual speed in a game where speed kills. If BY falls on his face this season, then he has to own it. Situation may not be perfect, but it's at least NFL average across the board. I won't beat him up for being bad in bad situations on a bad team. But a 4th year QB has to be able to control the offense and make players/coaches right. The team looks good enough on paper to show what he can do now.
