CHARLOTTE – The Panthers have filled out their coaching staff for the 2013 season by hiring veteran Bruce DeHaven to serve as assistant special teams coach and up-and-comer Lance Taylor to serve as assistant wide receivers coach and offensive quality control coach.

DeHaven, who will assist Richard Rodgers with the Panthers' special teams units, has been in charge of special teams units around the NFL for each of the past 26 seasons. He spent the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills, reprising the role with the team that he held from 1987-99. In between, he directed special teams units in San Francisco (2000-02), Dallas (2003-06) and Seattle (2007-09).

This past season, the Bills led the NFL in punt return average and ranked fourth in kickoff return average. In 2011, the Bills held opponents to an NFL-low 20.4 yards per kickoff return.

DeHaven was on the Bills coaching staff when Buffalo advanced to four consecutive Super Bowls in the early 1990s. He's often associated with Scott Norwood's missed 47-yard field goal at the end of Super Bowl XXV as well as the “Music City Miracle” that eliminated the Bills from the 1999 playoffs, but his units were outstanding throughout his tenure. DeHaven helped Steve Tasker become one of the best special teams performers in NFL history and consistently developed standout kickoff and punt return coverage units.

the lance taylor is kind of a "meh..." hire but the dehaven hire is quite nice. the guy should actually be the STs coach. i expect rodgers is on a short leash.

Taylor began his coaching career in 2007 as a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama, his alma mater. He joined the Crimson Tide program in 2000 as a walk-on and played in 38 consecutive games, serving as special teams captain his senior season.

If Taylor was a freshman walk-on at Bama in 2000, then he was a senior at Bama when Mike Shula was in his first year as head coach there.

And if he was a GA at Bama in 2007, he was a GA for Nick Saban during Saban's first year at Bama.

Taylor coached receivers for App State a few years ago before coaching with the Jets... Looks like AE might make it through his rookie contract after all.

i doubt it. AE was QB when he was at App, so he never coached him. I truthfully don't even remember the dude being there. it was during the weird years where we had a new WR coach each year from 08-11. the only thing it could mean would be Brian Quick coming to the Panthers if he were cut by the Rams

      We agree here dawg. I'd love for Bryce to succeed as would all huddlers. I have not seen a single huddler hate Bryce for anything other than his play on the field / potential / skillset. He hasn't gotten any of the irrational hate having nothing to do with football that Cam got. And yeah I understood going into this season with Bryce again as there weren't a ton of options, but man we missed the fuging mark on upgrading at backup QB with someone who could actually push Bryce. Bryce had zero pressure on him with a 100% washed up Dalton being the only other NFL caliber QB in the system. That absolutely needs to change this offseason. Ideally with an actual starter upgrade but that seems extremely unlikely due to not having many FA options and a bad draft. But at the very least with someone like you mentioned, young/upside and/or day 3 pick in the draft.   Another note, we have a top paid and top performing OL, great young talent at WR incl. likely OROY, great RB group, average all around TE group, offensive coach with creativity in the system and good play designs (poor situational playcalling but still I put out current offensive coaching staff over Shula who held Cam back for instance). Not the absolute best situation for a QB to be in, but still a very good situation around him. And yet we have a bottom 8 offense (6th lowest points scored). Imagine taking a victory lap for a QB leading his team to the 6th lowest points scored in the league and the 22nd highest passer rating (despite being asked to do less than many other QBs; i.e. Bo Nix who isn't great either and has a slightly lower passer rating but Sean Payton actually lets him try to throw the ball deep and has him throw significantly more than Bryce). Crazy

      similar to Atlanta and the NHL.  Atlanta has lost two NHL teams (and lost a minor leaguer).  Now there's another coalition pulling together another proposal for Atlanta to get an NHL expansion. While I'd like hockey to be back in Atlanta 'cause hockey is fun, I am skeptical that it'll happen based on previous teams' experience here alternatively: similar to Atlanta hosting a Major Tennis Tournament in advance of the US Open every mid/late summer.  Aside from the fact that Atlanta is said to be the country's largest Tennis playing city (with both USTA and ALTA, along with a number of side leagues) - playing tennis outdoors in Atlanta summer is miserable *and* they had difficulty attracting players... ticket sales were not good. So the Atlanta Open closed after 14 years.  They just couldn't make it happen, even if for all intents it appears to be massive tennis interest in the surrounding area.

      So I saw where Luke was doing that show parallel to the game. Whatever it was, statcast something something, knew it would be a good watch. I don’t get ESPN any more but that would be one of the about few things I would watch outside of games.     He doesn’t fool around on the radio broadcast.
