What is Stewart talking about on twitter?

"The NFL’s rules-making competition committee will propose this change to NFL owners at league meetings next week. At least 24 votes from 32 owners are required for passage."

Looks like it's not set in stone. This would be a terrible rule IMO.

Yeah it would be terrible. As much as I love the NFL, it keeps getting worse and worse as an overall product imo.

I know the NFL is king right now, and (justifiably?) arrogant about their position, but it's not impossible for them to fall. There was a time- not that long ago relatively speaking- when baseball was the undisputed king, and we see where that went. (I still love baseball, but it's nowhere near the level of popularity it once held.)

Some of the changes made to the game seem inevitable for the sake of player safety, but if I were the NFL I would simply include a liability waiver that must be signed in order to play the sport that puts full risk upon the participants- "Our game is very dangerous and you may die in an instant or from long-term effects of participation. Participation is entirely at your own risk." etc.

I'm sure there would be outcries from the segment of the population that feel it is their duty to protect everyone, whether they want to be protected or not, but I think it would be a way to maintain the game more or less in it's current (or recent past's) form. Athletes who were comfortable with the risks would continue to play and the rest would gtfo. The game would then be able to recapture the edge it has lost in recent years. Perhaps there would be more guaranteed money on offer to entice participation/ offset some of the hesitation about risk for those on the fence.

The point is that those comfortable with the level of violence and risk would continue to play, and the game could stop its downward spiral into flag football.

This rule is absolutely the dumbest thing I have ever heard. It's hilarious how stupid the notion of it even is. You are literally outlawing the players instinctive reflex to protect himself. The NFL has made some poor rules over recent years this is lunacy. You're literally outlawing one of the most important fundamentals of the game.

What amplifies the stupidity of this to absolutely legendary levels of comedy, is that because this exposes the runner to being blown up by every incoming defender (negating the supposed "safety" benefit to begin with) is that it allows the ballcarrier to be crushed or totally speared resulting in massive hits, which considering current refs now are content to flag every big hit and decide upon an infraction later, this is going to result in an absolutely hilarious amount of flags both ways.

The NFL is degrading joke territory, and at this rate, I don't foresee the sport being anywhere near the level it is now in 50 years.

    • The Saints didn't get off to a good start this year (neither did we) but they're "peaking" at a good time to at least play spoiler. Of course, it could be argued so are we. (I'd feel a lot better saying that if we win this Sunday, though) For now at least, the Saints are the only team in the division with a win over every other team. We have a chance to match that by season's end, and we'll need to if we really wanna make the playoffs. As to the players: I'd still say it's a little early to put Hubbard or Dowdle individually on a higher plane than Kamara (heaven knows i want them to be). Equal.isnt bad though. As a two pronged attack, hell yeah... but when are we gonna see that? 😕 Similar issue with Coker but he's getting back up to speed. Sure couldda used him in some earlier games. Mind you, I compare Coker to Pettis based on their depth chart positions, but realistically Coker ought to be our #2. (don't think too many would dispute that spot on our chart is basically a gaping black hole at the moment) And of course, McMillan. Over the last few games he's had some drops and things that made me wonder if the proverbial rookie wall was hitting. The good news there though is that if it is, our bye week hit at just the right time. The OL..yeah 😕 Now all that said, if everyone gets healthy and we smooth out a couple of rough spots, this time next year it's quite possibly a very different conversation. (one that'll make me, you and a lot of others here feel much more optimistic) 😁
