Ron Rivera: "We are more than coaches, we are mentors, teachers and instructors."

Good article.

http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/trending/post/_/id/15394/ron-rivera-on-preventing-domestic-violence

Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera has a simple directive for his players starting on day one: "Be a man."

Rivera has certainly earned his "man card." He was the son of an Army officer and played linebacker for Mike Ditka on the 1985 Chicago Bears as part of Buddy Ryan's ferocious "46" defense. He returned to the Super Bowl with the Bears as defensive coordinator in February 2007 and has been coaching the Panthers since 2011.

Rivera's definition of "manhood" goes far beyond toughness on the football field. As a husband and father, he has a keen sense of priorities.

"The greatest gift you can give children is to love and respect their mother," Rivera told Playbook, citing a similar quote from the late John Wooden. Rivera spoke to Playbook after he and CBS sportscaster James Brown led a seminar in Charlotte, N.C., sponsored by A Call to Men designed to teach high school coaches how they can help prevent domestic violence by helping players grow into men who are responsible citizens

Man this aint fugging middle school... were not here to facilitate people into society, we are here to field the best possible combination of 11 players on both offense and defense. I appreciate the fact he wants to connect with these players but fugging concentrate on getting them better at the game of football first, and life second........!!!

Oh, of course. Everyone knows football is more important than life

And hey, so what if they slap women around once in a while? As long as they get it done on the football field, a little domestic violence is no big deal, right?

(you know, I'd like to believe people aren't really this stupid, but I swear...) :(

hahaha omg. Okay, these people are 22+ years old i would hope that at the age of 22 you had your values in place and didnt need another authority figure to tell you what you should and shouldnt think. Maybe you were a little slower on the intelligence curve than the average so in that case, you'll learn soon.

It's a seminar for high school coaches.

Were the students where you attended high school over the age of 22?

(granted, reading these posts does actually make that scenario seem plausible)

Maybe you should actually read the story before saying anything else. Though truthfully, you could have gotten the age range right just by reading the initial post, which apparently you didn't.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
