We just signed Chase Blackburn

Blackburn had a career year in 2012 stat wise. Excellent depth at a position where two of the three starting players have an extensive injury history. Need another one or two linebackers as depth on the cheap. Probably coming through the draft.

Is anyone else happy that we are signing players that you have at least heard of? I got so tired of asking myself "Who?" everytime we signed someone.

My guess is no one had ever heard of Victor Cruz before the Giants signed him. Let's just trust Gettleman to shore up this team. He did not earn as rep as a grinder for nothing....and that is just what we need. The Panthers did not have the cap space to go on a big spending spree. What did you expect????

Gettleman has signed about 6 names I know and we started over the cap, Hurney never signed anyone even when we had money.

The fact that you don't follow the sport as closely as ohers does not say anything the usefulness of our signings.

My life Revolves around Football and I spend my day on a football forum = not following the sport very close.

We all know who Chase Blackburn is, but who the fug knew such names as legedu naanee.

God don't you hate those overachievers

No, I wasn't saying he is useless. He's a solid role player.

My point was, if they're bringing him in to play a significant role, or possibly start at some point, that overachieving can quickly turn the other way. Remember Lester Towns? How awesome was he here? What happened when he left?

As a depth signing, awesome. He's a hustle guy who has shown the tendency to make big plays... That's great if that is the capacity we'll be using him in.

And, in general, I'm VERY happy with what Gettleman has done in terms of FAs considering the position we were in. I still wish Gross would've restructured early so we could've signed at least one top-tier FA early on for a reasonable price (CB, DT, WR).

People who watch and follow the NFL did. They always mentioned him on Sportcenter for the simple fact of his name.

I remember Blackburn from when the Panthers played the Giants in the playoffs in '05. Their starting linebackers were so decimated by injury that they were forced to start Blackburn who was like their 6th string LB or something crazy like that. Turns out he was quite a find for them and now he plays for the Panthers.

    • Thielen was a "dawg" like Dan Morgan likes to say. And they replaced him with puppies.  The analytics are probably saying this is more targets for younger receivers they are hoping to develop, specifically the first round pick from 2025. The eye test is going to show a very inexperienced group of WRs that are going to have some serious growing pains, for a 3rd year QB who has not yet proven to be the guy going forward.  It's crazy how in the literal first game of his NFL career, Cam Newton showed everyone he was a star QB and there was never any doubt about that. It almost didn't even matter who was around him, although he definitely had a serious lack of talent at WR for most of his career. Bryce is going into his third season and there is still a ton of doubt, and who is around him is seen as crucial for him to have success. I don't like it.
    • Everyone says AT was old and slow but the one thing he could do consistently was get separation. That takes skill and it's been a huge issue in our WR for years. And while Moore may be a great locker room guy and our WR coach may be a 12 year vet, he's not playing in the game. Vets like AT do what they do because they can see things others don't and exploit it. The DB interview I mentioned before was with Stephon Gilmore after his DPOY season. He was pulling the younger DBs aside showing them things you wouldn't even think you'd be able to tell from the way the receiver was standing.  Seeing what a DB or LB is biting on in game that can give you that half step advantage is huge and we don't have that experience in our WR group right now and I think it could end up hurting us. None of our receivers have lined up against NFL corners successfully on a regular basis. Having someone that can walk over and give you a tip to get a half yard separation can be a difference maker.
    • We only fielded about 4 NFL calibre players on that unit last year.
