Steve Smith via his instagram:

"After 12 amazing seasons with the Panthers, I've decided it's time to step away from the game I love. It's something I've thought about for a long time, and after seeing Kevin Ware's injury last night, I realize just how precious life is. I will spend this next chapter of my life with my wife and kids, healthy and able-bodied. I will always be a Panther at heart."

Per Joe Person's twitter:

"Carolina Panther great Steve Smith plans to hold a press conference this afternoon where he is expected to announce his retirement from the NFL."

    • I know teams have been selling out to stop the run, but Ricos kind of fallen off a cliff.. not sure if hes hurt or just worn down but even when theres a hole he doesnt look anything like he did those few weeks prior.
    • nah, that's basically saying people can't call a spade a spade.  Which is crazy.  89 is not a good dude.  He might have done a couple good things but it will never erase what he has proven to be in front of the world.  I tell my kid all the time not to view celebrity athletes as anything but people that play a sport well.  Lot of garbage humans play on Sunday.   And you have no clue who the good guys actually are.  PR in today's world is also powerful.  There was a window when Deshawn Watson checked every good guy box that could ever existed from the public's perspective.
    • Some folks say it's because teams are playing more shell defenses preventing more longer passes.  The analytics folks would rather you pass for 7 years every down.  As you state, the crop of QBs is mixed as far as quality. I think when you put it all together, it's a recipe for less passing yards.
