Steve Smith via his instagram:

"After 12 amazing seasons with the Panthers, I've decided it's time to step away from the game I love. It's something I've thought about for a long time, and after seeing Kevin Ware's injury last night, I realize just how precious life is. I will spend this next chapter of my life with my wife and kids, healthy and able-bodied. I will always be a Panther at heart."

Per Joe Person's twitter:

"Carolina Panther great Steve Smith plans to hold a press conference this afternoon where he is expected to announce his retirement from the NFL."

OH WEE MAYNE. Looks like we definitely need a WR first round.

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
