Kiper on Panthers draft

PantherAZ

It didn't paste like I thought it would. Says that if Panthers can get a DT in first and S in second that Panthers will be, "off to the races." Says Richardson or Williams at 14.

Yea off like a herd of turtles.....give me some Tavon Austin and then we will be off to the races

Seeing as I could start at CB for the Bucs right now, I'm not seeing the high DT pick for them. I think that, barring the Revis trade going down, Rhodes is almost a lock to go to Tampa provided he's still on the board. Plus there is no way whatsoever Star escapes the top 10.

Richardson really strikes me as the diet-coke version of Nick Fairley and doesn't address a weakness. We were already generating a decent-to-good pass rush but couldn't stop carolina-chuck if he lined up at RB. No thanks. Grab a fat ass to anchor down in the second if you're not sold on Kearse or Cole.

If we take Vaccaro at #14, I'm gonna stick my fist through a wall. No clue what people are seeing in this guy that makes them think he's going to be an elite NFL safety.

Really? There have been a few people on the board that are adamantly against taking Vaccaro. I don't understand why. He is easily the most instinctual safety in the draft.

I hate to say it, but I actually agree with him. If the Panthers can sign Hixon and add a DT and S starter then they're going to be a tough team. I've got one full leg on the WR at #14 bandwagon, but if we sign Hixon as a #3 (with Ginn already in the rotation and "hopefully" Gettis competing) then I think it has to be D in the 1st and 2nd.

Ginn is mostly for return duties and Hixon still has to overcome his injury history. Neither are likely long term solutions. Gettis will be lucky to make the roster this season. After that we have Armanti (lol) and Pilares. We also have the eventual retirement of Steve Smith looming. Gettleman is going to draft a receiver, even if it isn't at #14.

I absolutely don't think they're long term solutions. I do think Ginn could add some value lining up and going deep - he's still got great speed and Cam can throw one hell of a deep ball. My point was that if Hixon signs (which he did), then I think they have to go D in the first two rounds. We can all agree that the WR group is already improved from last year.

And I don't think you can automatically say Gettis won't make the team. That's a huge assumption without seeing the guy on the field in a year.

In 2 years but people will make that assumption without knowing the situation.

I would love for Ginn and Hixon to have a break out year here, time will tell. Essentially Gettis hasn't seen the field in two years, Fox was head coach at the time.. Now we have a new GM, the odds are not in his favor. Hey I will be hoping for his return to form, but we can't sit on our hands waiting around though.

I agree. I'm sure Gettis will be battling just to make the team. I don't expect much from Hixon or Ginn. I think Hixon is a much better target than Murphy. That's a definite improvement. I can see us still going WR in the 4th. Loving all the competition at that position this year.

Give us 2 impact defensive starters at DT and in the Secondary. We will win this division. None of the Teams can stop us on offense in this division. With some addition on defense we can stop them.

OL still hasn't been fixed....and as is puts a lot of pressure on Cam. OL wasn't good last year even with Kalil healthy.

Now maybe Amini improves but if he doesn't G play is still below average. RT play as well.

    • I'm not sure 19 is too high for Rodriguez anymore.  He looks to be moving up boards, but it could be smokescreens.
    • I see XL this way---great athlete.  Good person.  When we drafted him, we knew he was raw.  One year of WR in college (starting) and in HS, he was a QB, I believe. We knew we would need patience with him.  I think year 3 will be make or break.  He is older, and I think that people with his athletic ability have always been better than those with less---but those with less can become more successful.  Why is that?  in my view, it is mental. XL can learn the mechanics and nuances of playing WR if he becomes focused on it and works at it.  I had the opportunity to talk to Armanti Edwards one day after OTAs (great guy) and he discussed how overwhelming it was.  He seemed shocked.  At that time, I knew that Fox hated the pick (I heard him mock Armanti to another coach when he saw Edwards drop a punt from a jugs machine--then I saw Armanti look back at Fox as if to suggest that he was feeling the pressure to please the coach. We forget that these are kids in their early 20s.  At the time, Fox was a lame duck.  Remember when he had Clausen as the #3 QB and was forced to move him up the ladder?  I liked Fox, but I think the climate and culture was influenced by the politics.  Currently, I see another Wr from SC who is struggling, but he is ina  very nurturing, positive culture. Let's see what happens with XL.  I am frustrated too---but XL was a second round talent who was raw and we traded up to get him.  He had 500 yards as a rookie--lets call 2025 a sophomore slump and see if we can't get at least 50 yards per game out of him.  If not, cut bait.
    • Sadiq feels like a lazy comp.  Sure he would be a big improvement over what we have but at a position we don't and maybe can't (midget qb) utilize.  I hope the staff puts together a list of players you automatically take at 19 (Freeling, Lemon, Downs, Faulk) and if none are there, trade back to look at (Thieneman, McNeil-Warren, Proctor, Lomu, Allen, Iheanachor, Banks, Woods).  I get the people that think an OT would be a waste because we temporarily patched that hole, and ILB and safety are a waste because that is high to take those particular positions, but by trading back we get extra picks to fill every need.  A draft that has an OT, S, ILB, slot WR, and C would really put us in a good position moving forward if we get an extra first three rounds additional pick.
