GP's 3rd and Final Mock Draft

I usually do a mock draft right before the combine, right after, and right before the draft. This is my final one. Now that the bulk of free agency is over and almost all draft evaluating is complete, I am able to tell a lot more about how the Panthers may decide to use their draft picks.

First I am going to tell you the order in which I think we will draft. When Gettleman said he will set us up to draft BPA, many people thought that meant at any position. What I think he meant is BPA among our needs. Make no mistake, we won't be taking RB or QB in the first just because he's the best player available. With that said, I think the order of our biggest needs are as followed: NT, OG, CB, SS, WR. We have made signings at almost every position of need except for NT and OG. That and the fact that we have been bringing in a lot of mid round S and WR prospects is the reason I think we will go NT and OG first. Our situation at CB is far from being solid but I think we made enough moves to put it off to the later rounds or just stay with what we've got. As far as safety, I really liked what I saw at the end of the year with Godfrey at FS and Campbell at SS. I think we will leave Godfrey at FS and bring in a mid rounder to compete with Campbell and Mitchell at SS. WR is kind of a wildcard position

Draft

1st round - Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama - If Warmack is not available here, I think we can go Cooper or NT; I just don't see a NT worthy of this pick unless Star falls. I could Also see us go tackle here and move Bell inside.

2nd round - Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama - Great run-stuffer that would allow CJ and Hardy to go crazy. Would solidify our front 7 as one of the best in the NFL.

4th round - Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma

5th round - Duke Williams, SS, Nevada

6th round - Ryan Otten, TE, San Jose State

I love Warmack but I've accepted the fact that Gettleman taking an offensive lineman in the 1st is unlikely given his association with Ernie Accorsi.

I'm pretty sure he's the one who said big men allow you to compete. It may not be a flashy pick but we saw how important this position is last year

@Dash It's not always the flashy picks that win you ballgames. By drafting guard you allow D-lo and Stew to get back to 2010 form. You also allow Cam more time in the pocket. Think deeper.

Games are won in the trenches. I believe that.

The issue is its not hard to find a OG that can come in and play ok-good. Sorta like DT. You saw how much our DL improved by bringing in two average at best vets.

Its not a premium position like OT where its hard to find quality players.

Id be completely fine with an OG in the first if we didnt need major help in other areas.

You can get good OG's later in the draft.

really really dont like the idea of taking a G at 14......

I am curious as to who you do like at 14. I've seen you bash the idea of taking Austin because "he's a slot guy." You don't like the idea of taking an elite guard at 14, or taking an elite UT at 14. There are no NTs that will be available there that are worthy of the pick. Your mock had us trading back, IIRC.

Don't think I'm attacking you here, I really am just curious as to who you actually would be okay with drafting at 14.

    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
    • Ok LT and Petersen are a cut above everyone else to me cmc and Faulk are interchangeable on this list.  though Faulk was better career wise
    • Maybe faked was too strong of a word.  "Milked" may be the better way to call it.
