Mock that probably won't (and maybe shouldn't) happen...

...but i wouldn't hate.

why do one that probably won't happen? why not? i had 15 minutes to spare waiting for someone to get back to me on something and i can't go outside to work on anything because it's sleeting (and was snowing for a few minutes).

since it probably won't happen (not that any mock isn't a crapshoot to begin with) i might as well throw in a trade to move backwards in the first to make this happen. details about the trade? who cares? we pick up a 3rd. that's all you need to know.

first and second round picks could be interchangeable with the same players. i've seen both picks taken in the first round in some mocks and both taken in the 2nd (or even later) in others. i don't really see anything consistent with either guy but i'll just throw this out there to be the more likely scenario of the unlikely draft.

anyways.....

1st) Jonathan Cyprien-S- Florida Int.

- tough as nails. hard hitting. good in coverage. decent size (tho, i'd rather have one a little taller). solid tackler/wrap-up guy. really good against the run. takes care of business in the box and does well outside. aggressive. can basically do it all. some have him listed as FS (tho i think he's just pretty good there) and others have him listed as SS (his stronger suit, imo).

2nd) Jesse Williams -NT/DT- Alabama

- raw? yep...but has picked up on the job quite nicely and can play NT or any gap on the line. another aggressive guy. really good against the pass and against the run. a real disruptor against both. dude's probably the strongest in the draft (600lb bench press) and has yet to work with a pro-level weight training program. same with his talent level. give him pro-level coaching and he'll blossom quickly. he's super aggressive and seems like just the right nut case to line up beside hardy.

3rd) Da'Rick Rogers WR-Tenn Tech

- pretty much julio jones in the 3rd round. enuff said.

4th) Alvin Bailey -OG- Arkansas

- dude's a hoss. big, aggressive, athletic, and can be dominant...when he's 'on'. guy needs coaching and guidance for sure, but comes with a lot to work with. probably shouldn't start early, but has more than enough to develop into a reliable RG moving forward.

5th) Marcus Lattimore - RB- USC

- i know some would hate it, but he's a playmaker extraordinaire. if he's there in the 5th you take him and then move on from one of your overpriced RBs the following year *if* he can stay healthy. he can do it all. run, catch, pass-pro...it's all a matter of letting him get healthy. before that injury last year he'd have been a first rounder easily. if he doesn't work out...hey, it was only a 5th. but if it does then we got a stud for cheap.

6th) Sanders Comming -CB/S- Georgia

- built like a safety, works it like a CB. i'd honestly be shocked to see him drop this far, but whatever...i put him here. sure, he's not the 6'2 he was thought to be...closer to 6' (senior bowl had him at 5'11. was drafted to play MLB by the arizona diamondbacks so he's got good instincts for going after the ball. he's someone i would expect to see switched to FS and i think he'd do well there if we decided to move on from godfrey after next year. pair him up with cyprien and i think we'd be set at safety for years.

don't like this mock? too bad. i'm not giving any refunds.

I like Cyprien, but I see CB as a far bigger need.

I think Godfrey is the starting FS and one of the other guys on the roster is the SS.

So for me, make the 1st a CB or WR and I'd be content.

Gambling on Lattimore at that point wouldn't bother me at all, not with the potential he has shown and DLo on short time here.

i pretty much have cyprien as a SS. he could play FS, but i think he's better suited for SS.

and i think that rogers in the 3rd is about as good as any WR you're going to get in the 2nd and not a huge drop off from the first round guys. the talent is there.

i've said quite often that i want to have a WR in either the first or the second, but i kind of challenged myself to think outside of that box. i think we do end up taking a WR with one of the first couple picks, tho.

as far as CB....i'm just not loving this class for some reason. fwiw, national football post has commings listed as the 4th CB. i don't know where they get that, but i think he'd strengthen the CB corps we have and i like him against bigger receivers. the CBs we had last year weren't horrible at all and they were able to capitalize well on the pressure the front seven was able to put on them so if we don't add much to the CBs this year, i don't think it would be that big of a deal compared to other areas. i do think it's something that needs to be addressed in the near future, tho.

I'm in the minority who likes our CB corps, especially with Munnerlyn and the other additions. I could easily see the Josh's locking down the outside. However, confidence is a tough thing to build and Norman worries me in that respect. There are several CB's I'd be happy with.

As for SS I like how well DJ Campbell played and they also brought some other guys in. I realize part of that is competition for TC, but they seem to have focused on the secondary this FA so I'm a little up in the air as far as what to expect goes. With Gettleman at the helm I don't guess any of us really have a clue what to expect.

I like Rodgers and I think the top 6 - 10 WR's in this draft are all pretty talented with no real stand outs. I just know that Smith can't last too much longer and we desperately need a bona fide play making WR who can stretch the field to supplement and eventually supplant Smith as the 1. I like LaFell, but don't see him ever becoming a 1.

This draft has many holes and is less than perfect. But in the end, that's what drafts usually are. Especially for teams like the Panthers that more needs than picks.

If it falls this way we get 2 probable starters, 2 - 3 rotational guys, some special teams help and an interesting prospect(s). That said, I like the realism.

I like it, Cyprien is the best Safety in the class imo. Williams and Rodgers with the next two picks is solid. Bailey is a solid OG prospect that could start day 1 on the Panthers. Really like the upside Lattimore has if he can stay healthy and Comming is a solid fit in Carolina and could also start.

    • Never been. Going to a concert there Thursday night. Decent tailgating opportunities in the parking area or no? I see people are going to the beer hall to grab a beer to get their parking validated. Seems like a good plan to me. I'd like to smoke a brisket and do a decent spread of food but I just don't know if the parking setup allows for it.

    • Bryce also has a degree in psychology. He has an uncanny ability to compartmentalize things in a way that allows him to enter his second NFL season with optimism that he can still be the player who was worthy of being the No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft despite the kind of rookie year that has destroyed others in his position. Young credits that in part to his past. He graduated from the University of Alabama in three years with a degree in psychology. His father was a therapist in the mental health field for 20 years. His mother was a special education teacher, and his grandfather was a psychologist. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40334565/bryce-young-developing-leader-panthers-year-2
