would you take a shot on a player who has never played football 7th round?

The fact that he does look like a linebacker should speak volumes.

It would in a body building contest. His workout numbers would matter at a track meet.

Is he a great athlete for his size? Sure, but the guy's never played football. Go back and look at Brock Lesnar's workout numbers. Ridiculous. However, he couldn't make the Vikings roster despite having actually played football through HS.

Every single guy is different though. Just because a roided up pro wrestler can't make it doesn't mean a Rugby and track athlete can't either....

I know what most of you are thinking. But in the 7th... this kind of freakish talent is rare. and on a throw away pick why not...can't be worst than fua and mcclain.

if Armanti Edwards was a 3rd round Pick, I will pick him in the 7th or even the 6th round if we had one... by the way how many 7th rounders are on our current roster, my point exactly and Rugby is kind of similar to Football

Agreed. I just wouldn't want to waste any pick on a guy who has no football experience or was years removed from the sport. I mean, hell, other than Antonio Gates is there any other guy in the NFL who fits that mold? Even he was a UDFA.

Is it really wasting a pick though if you take him in the seventh? The chances of a seventh even making the final roster are slim to none anyway. I would much rather take a guy who has freakish ability but needs to learn the nuances of the game, then take a guy who doesn't have that ridiculous high ceiling, and at best will probably be a Special Teams player....

You're arguing with the wrong person, if you would have read the previous posts you would realize that I meant that post in a negative way. I don't want my 300 pound defensive end looking like a linebacker.

I get that people are hesitant because he's never played a down of football and that's understandable, but until two years ago Ziggy Ansah hadn't either. Now with that short experience he's likely a top ten pick. You get this kid in the seventh and get him into film study and working with coaches on learning the game and the sky could be the limit with the God given ability he has....

With his frame, he'd have to add another 30# or so to play the 3 technique. He'd be losing a lot of leverage on the inside. Based solely on his measurable, I think he'd probably be best suited as a 3-4 DE.

I disagree. Most 3 techs are in the 300lb range. Matter of fact the guy is built very similar to Brockers and Cox. IF he could play the game he'd be a 5 tech or a 3...and probably DE as well because he's similar in size to hardy also. Who by the way plays a lot of 3 tech himself, on passing downs.

Hell yes, I would take the dude in the 7th round. Are you kidding?

1) He's a freak athlete. Very rare athleticism for his body type.

2) He's played rugby which is just as physical as the NFL(if you doubt that, watch a rugby game), so he's used to physicality.

3) He has a high IQ, ergo he's smart, should be able to pick up on the NFL game in at least 2 years, let's not pretend an NFL scheme is rocket science.

4) It's a 7th round pick... how many 7th rounders have made teams each season?

5) Main problem is would be if he can develop NFL instincts and experience.

6) So what if DE is not a need for the Panthers NOW? Never can have too many quality pass rushers and things change VERY fast in the NFL.(injuries, erosion etc.)

People who are screaming DE isn't a need right now are sure going to be pretty pissed when we can't re-sign Hardy next year (and it's a very real possibility), and CJ is getting doubled every play again....

    • I don't think it was fear of the unknown because he tried to hide the extent of the injuries that made him drop. After the drop, the reports I heard were that teams knew what was wrong with his knee and it was something similar to another athlete from a few years ago (honestly don't remember if it was even a football player).  That it was basically one of those things where he should be fine for a while, there isn't a huge concern of immediate injury risk.   But what he has going on with his knee is something that is degenerative and there's little chance he'll be able to play more than 5 or so years on it before he won't be able to play anymore. So basically it was teams knowing if they draft him, he's probably going to be only a rookie contract player and even if he's great, you might not be able to get use out of him on a second contract.  Which in turn makes the drop make sense, but I'm kinda surprised some contending team didn't take him late in the 1st, hoping he'd put them over the top on a SB run but then not even have to worry about giving him a big contract in 4 years too.
    • Depends if they see the writing on the wall with their roster and contracts and decide to bite the bullet and begin a complete rebuild and roster overhaul.  I have no clue why some franchises (IE us) refuse to do this and keep half assing trying to win 8 games or so.  Do it correctly, take your lumps and build a contender.  We shall see what loomis decides.
    • Each team plays 17 games.  I do not see why they don't just have each team play one international game per year.  Neutral site game, 8 home, 8 away.
