Steve Smith and HOF

Yeah, he can play elsewhere, but the Panthers need not let anyone else wear 89.

I don't think he plays in another uniform, but if he does he won't be so different from other people who needed to hang it up (like all the players you mentioned). The only way I could see him going somewhere else is in a late bid to get a ring. I wouldn't hate on him for that. I would hate on the Panthers for unceremoniously putting him out to pasture, but if it comes to that I'd get over it. I just don't want to see Joe Blow or John Doe donning the 89.

I think Ron Rivera is the last coach Smitty plays for in Carolina personally...

Now, there are many different paths that can go but I don't see Smith doing another regime change here.

I think Canton would find that in this day in age, a great wide receiver playing for the same small market team his entire career has to look noble and honorable to some. I hope he gets a ring, but if he can pull off 3 more 1000 yard seasons, he'll get in regardless of post season success.

Oh, yeah, that's a surety. How could we ever let any other player wear 89? Panthers fans everywhere would explode, and the epicenter of the indignation would be the Huddle.

Yep. 89 should be retired and should be next to his name on the ring of honor. They should put his over the end zone.

There are people that consider Andre Johnson, Hall of Fame caliber. If so, Smitty definitely belongs.

They have similar numbers except that Steve can actually score TDs. If I'm not mistaken, Dre has never broken 10 TDs in a season. He gets lots of catches and lots of yards and has had an actual QB for the last 5 years.

Hopefully we get a bit of FeedTheStud with the new OC.

3000 more yards won't make him a lock....it ain't just about his stats the day he retires.

It is about his numbers when he is being considered for the vote....passing league and a bunch of guys are off to some great statistical starts.

His regular season stats won't be good enough when eligible...

Unfortunately no, If he didn't have the rough couple years with Jimmy, Matt Moore, St. Pierre etc. he MAYBE gets in.

Smitty statically was just as good with Matt Moore on the field as with Jake or Cam

I'll give you Jimmy Jam though
