*aints restructure/extend Roman Harper

If I was the coach, I would've just flushed the entire defense down the toilet and started over.

Exactly!  Harper is one of the biggest culprits for them sucking.  He is an in box safety only and now they just drafted another one.

when you have the worst defense in the league, the first step to fixing it is to re-sign its core players

#duh

He was already under contract, they actually just freed money and got him to take a pay cut. Currently Saints are $5.1millon under cap mostly thanks to this.

The Saints saved $3.44 million against this year's salary cap by signing a new deal with Harper. He will count $3.66 million against the cap now, down from $7.1 million. Already $2.6 million of Harper's base salary was guaranteed this season as the contract stipulation was triggered on the third day of the league year in March.

Harper took a pay cut of $1.5 million this year as part of the deal (from $5.35 million to $3.85 million). But it was a win-win now that he gets almost all of the money up front and doesn't have to worry about being released as a cost-saving measure.

A little math, prior to this, Harper was $7.1 mil against this years cap with $5.25M salary. If they cut him, they still were out $4.35M in cap space. So they restructured and gave him paycut to where he now counts $3.6 against cap instead of $7.1.

So basically instead of cutting Harper and losing $4.35M in cap space, they keep him on team for $3.6M, and free up $3.5 mil in cap space. I missed the part where this is LOLOLOLOLOLOL? They freed up enough money for another FA signings?

saints suck

Just pointing out Loomis made a great deal, he's keeping the guy for less money than cutting him. Harper was considered one of the leagues best safeties in '08-'10, was injured and mediocre in '11 and everyone was terrible under Spags. Harper may get back up to previous form if Ryan uses him correctly.

Sounds like something one of them *aints fans would say.

    • Outside of cerrato, I do like our draft overall. Hard to get can't miss draft picks when you pick late in the draft
    • Very True--and I am a former HS English teacher.
    • Not a Moore fan-but he had a few good games last year-but I want players that scare you--Renfrow's route running and intelligence, Legette's size, speed, and strength, AT's intelligence and route running, Coker's body control, strong hands, and abilty to win contested catches, and TMac's size, body control, and ability to find soft spots in zone coverages.  Horn gives them the ability to stretch the field and he plays special teams.   Moore has a nice smile and can dance.  He filled in well last season, but to get better as a team, you have to upgrade your players.  I think Moore is a bottom of the roster guy who got bumped when we drafted 2 WRs and signed a legit free agent.  Here is the thing--TMac makes us better because he is great against the zone--man?  Good luck with that.  AT's role can be reduced, and that is probably a good thing.  He can specialize in situational football. Coker?  Just getting started. XL?  Just getting started.  Drafting TMac was probably a bit of a wake up call, but XL will be better as the 2. Renfrow?  I see him splitting reps with AT--keeping both fresh and giving different looks. Horn?  Watch the safety cheat his side when he is in the game--I see a young Steve Smith type in him, but he has yet to play a game.  I hear that Morgan loves him.
